I remember the day this picture was taken.

I was in my Navy flight suit, doing what I did day in and day out. But as soon as I picked up my daughter Kelli, the context of my uniform shifted.

The hard edges of my duty softened in her presence. It didn’t matter what mission I had been on or where the world needed me next.

In that moment, my world was her.

The contrast between the uniform I wore and the little floral dress she was wrapped in is the perfect metaphor for fatherhood: strength meets gentleness.

Being a father is like that.

It’s a balancing act between being the protector and the nurturer. The one who goes out into the world to face whatever challenges may come, while always being the one who will drop everything to hold their child.

For me, holding Kelli in my arms, it was a reminder that even though I wore that flight suit, even though I had a role to play in serving my country, my most important role was right there.

She was the one who would look to me for guidance, for comfort, for love. And it wasn’t about being perfect. It wasn’t about always knowing the answers.

It was about showing up.

Being there.

Holding her close when she needed me, no matter where life took us.

Now, looking back at that photo, I see more than just a dad in a uniform. I see a moment in time, a snapshot of a bond that continues to grow. That moment reminds me of what it means to be a father—not just the protector, not just the provider, but the person who is always ready to embrace, to lift, to carry, no matter the circumstance.

And here I am now, years later, holding onto a different kind of moment.

Watching her step into this new chapter, I’m filled with the same pride and joy I felt when I held her all those years ago.

As Kelli and her husband Alberto begin their life together, I hope she carries with her the same feeling I’ve tried to show her all these years: that love is about presence. It’s about showing up for each other, in the little moments and the big ones.

I find myself once again reflecting on this picture, on the ways we keep those we love close.

I may not always be holding her in my arms, but I will always be here, waving goodbye in our own special way, never too far, always just a moment away.

And that, I think, is what it means to be a father.☕️

🗣️BK Biweekly Quote:  Fathering is not something perfect men do, but something that perfects the man.” – Frank Pittman

💡BK Tiny Tip:  Never underestimate the power of simply being there. The moments when you hold your child close, listen, or offer a gentle word of encouragement are the ones that stay with them forever. It’s not about grand gestures; it’s about the quiet, consistent presence that shows your love every day.

🤯BK Mind-blowing Fact:  Studies have shown that daughters who have a strong relationship with their fathers are more likely to have higher self-esteem, better emotional health, and more confidence in their relationships as adults. A father’s presence and involvement can significantly influence a daughter’s sense of security, shaping how she views herself and the world around her. This underscores the profound impact a father’s love and guidance can have, far beyond just childhood—it’s a foundation that lasts a lifetime.

✏️BK Journaling Prompt:  Reflect on a moment when you felt an overwhelming sense of love or protection for someone you care about. How did that moment change your perspective on what it means to truly be there for someone? How might you continue to show up in that way, even as life takes you both in different directions?
