Feeling the heat in midlife?

Feeling the heat in midlife?

Existing new program launch based on CBT with TherapHeal

What crosses your mind when you hear the word - HOT FLASHES?

The most infamous symptom we all have heard of in menopausal women!

Some of us at Miyara can vividly visualize Samantha Jones (Sex and the City) fanning herself to cool down or applying estrogen creams to prevent embarrassing situations in social settings!

Although hot flashes are extremely prevalent during the menopausal transition (reported by 56-79% of Indian women and about 75% of women globally), what many do not realize is that multiple ways to manage or minimize such episodes.

Did you know that you can train your brain to minimize fluctuations in the core body temperature? Isn't that mind-blowing?

Such is the power of mind-body connection!

This is exactly the basis of our newly launched science-backed hot flash management program using cognitive therapy-based techniques in partnership with qualified mental health experts from our partners, TherapHeal.

A majority of women just accept hot flashes as a given in this phase and underestimate the long-term implications of unmanaged severe temperature fluctuations (that lead to hot flashes and night sweats, which together are grouped as vasomotor or climacteric symptoms).

With the right knowledge and guidance, one can identify underlying factors, address them, and not endure the discomfort and embarrassment in silence. While it is not a one-size-fits-all solution and takes a few trials to figure out what works for each individual (based on the severity/ frequency/ lifestyle), certain methods have proven effective in managing these agonizing (and sometimes debilitating! especially sleep disturbances) symptoms like hormonal therapy.

But wait!  We are not just talking about hormonal therapy (HRT).

Watch related: What women should know about Menopause?

While there is substantial evidence that hormone therapy can improve hot flashes, not all are ready to take it for fear of side effects and some may not be eligible for HRT due to genetic or medical conditions.

Non-hormonal strategies to treat hot flashes

Research has shown that non-hormonal drugs (nutraceuticals, herbs) and therapies can help to some extent but most of these solutions have not been scientifically validated. While incorporating minor changes to one’s daily lifestyle habits and being mindful of seasonal triggers might help in overall health, they have not evidence-backed.

Top on this list of non-hormonal approaches is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) because it is a multifaceted approach to manage an array of menopausal symptoms.

The first step to resolution is to be in tune with your body cues and able to recognize when hot flashes occur.

Take inspiration from celebs like Drew Barrymore, who experienced her first episode while on air!

But how does CBT work?

CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a negative cycle.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is used to treat mental health conditions such as depressionanxietyobsessive-compulsive disorder, and addictions. But it can also be used to treat physical conditions such as chronic pain, tinnitus , and rheumatism.

What does it have to do with hot flashes you might ask?

Well, more recently, group CBT as well as self-guided CBT is a powerful tool in managing hot flashes after breast cancer treatment, for perimenopausal as well as post-menopausal women.
