Feeling Undervalued at Work? Here’s How to Take Control of Your Career

Have you ever poured your heart and soul into your work, only to feel like your efforts are going unnoticed? It’s a frustrating and disheartening experience that many professionals in Singapore encounter. Despite delivering results and going the extra mile, the recognition you seek seems perpetually out of reach.

In a highly competitive environment like Singapore, this feeling can be particularly acute. Many of us also grapple with imposter syndrome - doubting our accomplishments and fearing that others will expose us as frauds. These combined feelings of being undervalued and questioning our worth can be overwhelming.

But here’s the truth: you are not alone, and these feelings don’t have to define your career. There are actionable steps you can take to reclaim your confidence and steer your career in the right direction. Let’s explore how you can navigate these challenges and take control of your career.

Invest in Your Skills

In a fast-evolving economy like Singapore’s, continuous learning is crucial. However, the avenues for skill development can be different from those in other regions. Here’s how you can invest in your skills:

  • Enrol in Courses at SkillsFuture

  • Sign Up for Industry Certifications

  • Seek Mentorship and Peer Learning Opportunities

Seek New Opportunities

In Singapore’s bustling business hub, opportunities abound if you know where to look. Whether you’re eyeing a new role within your current company or considering moving to a different industry, being proactive is key.

Utilise Platforms like Linkedin

  • This portal is a valuable social media platform for exploring job opportunities and networking with others to expand your professional connections. It’s a great starting point for finding roles that align with your career goals.

Network through Professional Associations

  • Organisations such as Singapore Global Network provide networking events that can open doors to new opportunities.

Communicate Your Value

Effectively communicating your worth can be challenging. However, clear and confident communication is essential for career growth.

Build Your Personal Brand on LinkedIn

  • Share your insights, accomplishments, and professional journey on LinkedIn. Post regularly about industry trends, write articles, and engage with your network. This not only showcases your expertise but also establishes you as a thought leader.

Seek Feedback and Act on It

  • Regularly ask for feedback from your teammates and superiors. Use this input to improve your performance and demonstrate your commitment to growth. It also shows that you value their perspectives and are open to learning.

Master the Art of Self-Advocacy

  • Learn to confidently discuss your strengths and the value you bring to the table. Practice articulating your achievements and contributions in a way that aligns with your career objectives.

Surround Yourself with Supportive People

As I look back on my career journey, one of the most profound realisations is how the people around me have shaped my path. Being surrounded by supportive individuals has been a cornerstone of my professional growth and personal well-being. Their encouragement, wisdom, and unwavering belief in my potential have often been the buoy that kept me afloat during challenging times.

Early in my career, I grappled with feelings of inadequacy. It was during these moments of doubt that the presence of mentors and supportive colleagues became my guiding light. Their faith in my capabilities helped me see beyond my insecurities and recognise the value I brought to the table.

One of the most rewarding aspects of these relationships is the reciprocal nature of support. Just as I have been lifted by others, I have found immense satisfaction in offering encouragement and guidance to those who look up to me. This mutual exchange of support and wisdom creates a ripple effect, strengthening the entire community and making each of us more resilient and empowered.

Your worth is not dictated by others’ opinions. It’s shaped by your skills, your contributions, and most importantly, your belief in yourself.
