Fertility Files | November 29, 2024
Welcome to #FertilityFiles! Your weekly dose of fertility news, challenges, and unfiltered POVs. In this week’s edition, we’re still out here fighting for equal fertility access and pushing back against the gender bias that just won’t quit. Here’s what’s been making headlines—and why we’re shaking our heads (and fists) about it:
Endometriosis and Mortality Risk
A 30-year study of 110K women found that those with endo face a 31% higher risk of dying before 70. Yup, endo isn't just about fertility issues—it’s a wake-up call for doctors to actually listen when women speak up about their health. Read now. ( Femtech World )
Actress Florence Pugh Says a Gynecologist Dismissed Her PCOS Diagnosis
Even celebrities can’t avoid medical gaslighting. Pugh got the ultimate eye-roll when her London gynecologist dismissed her PCOS and endometriosis diagnosis, despite confirmation from a U.S. doctor. Classic case of medical gaslighting! 😒 Pugh’s experience is a reminder that women’s health often gets shrugged off…time for doctors to listen up and stop playing the “you’re fine” card. Read now. Number of Single Women Choosing IVF to Have Babies Alone Triples
Women are taking control of their reproductive futures and saying “nope” to waiting for Mr. Right. But here’s the kicker: fertility funding is still wildly unequal for single women and same-sex couples. Seriously, can we get it together? Read now. ( Sapphire Hope , GB News )
Women Say Doctors Don't Believe Them When They're in Pain, Sick or Dying
Surprise, surprise… women’s symptoms are still being dismissed by doctors. 🙄 Allison McCabe’s life-threatening experience is just the tip of the iceberg. Experts say gender bias training needs a major upgrade, focusing on real, actionable change in clinical settings. Read now. ( Malone Mullin , CBC News )
2 House Republicans Seek to Stop IVF Expansion in Defense Bill
Reps. Matt Rosendale (Mont.) and Josh Brecheen (Okla.) are calling to exclude IVF access for military families from the National Defense Authorization Act, arguing it ‘is ineffective, leads to the destruction of innocent human life, and does nothing to treat the root cause of a couple’s infertility.’ This gave us the ick. 🤮 Stop making reproductive health a political battleground and let’s ensure individuals and families navigating fertility have the freedom to make their own decisions. Read now. ( Nexstar Media Group, Inc. )
Netflix’s “Joy” Shines Light on IVF and Infertility
Joy tells the incredible true story of the scientists who brought us the first baby born through IVF, but also reminds us how far we still need to go in eradicating fertility stigma. Jean Purdy and her team fought not just for science, but for their right to exist without public shame. Fast forward to today, and while things have improved a little, fertility choices are still being politicized, and stigma is alive and kicking (i.e. the above article 🫠). Read now. ( MSN )
Why Funding Women’s Health Shouldn’t Be Up for Debate
Women are half the population and birth the future, yet healthcare acts like we’re an afterthought. Only 10.8% of NIH funding goes to women’s health. Alzheimer’s? Women are 2/3 of cases but get 12% of funding. Heart disease? Our top killer, but just 4.5% of research dollars. Menopause? Ignored in 99% of aging studies. The good news: advocacy has unlocked $1B for women’s health research. But we need Congress to prioritize this in the next budget. It’s 2024—funding women’s health isn’t a favor; it’s a necessity.
