FIND CLARITY AND CONFIDENCE ABOUT THE BEST NEXT STEPS FOR YOUR MARRIAGE!
Is there an either/or between marriage guidance and divorce? For couples on the brink or in crisis, this polarised decision seems to be the only choice. But what if there was something in between? Discernment counselling or coaching can help people make a better-informed decision about which path they should take.
Discernment counselling, a system devised by Dr. Bill Doherty, has helped so many people make difficult decisions from an informed position. As the UK’s only Certified Discernment Counsellor, trained by Bill, I work with couples in crisis the help them decide which path is best for them and their family.
Too many couples go down the divorce route because they think it is the only way open to them after an affair or months of feeling disconnected. They often make this decision from a position of emotional reaction and later regret it. On the other hand, many couples spend months in marriage guidance therapy, only to find themselves ending up in the divorce courts later.
In most couples in either situation, there will be one partner who is leaning in and trying to save the marriage, whilst the other is leaning out and feels there is no point in trying to save a dying duck. It’s no wonder that a large percentage of couples going through therapy end up getting divorced.
Working with a discernment counsellor or coach can change these outcomes. Discernment counselling or coaching is a short-term (1-5 sessions) structured process exploring whether there is something worth working for in the marriage and finding a way forward with integrity and intention. It has three potential outcomes: path 1 – keep the status quo (very few <15% choose this), path 2 – go down the divorce route having considered all other avenues to try to salvage the marriage, path 3 – commit to 6 months all-out working on the relationship and the self with divorce completely off the table.

Discernment coaching will help you explore how your relationship got to this place and what your role in that might have been. With compassion and curiosity, we will explore your reasons for wanting to leave, and what would need to happen for your to want to stay. One-on-one without your partner in the room, you’ll have the opportunity to explore your doubts and fears, your hopes and desires/ This is a no-judgement zone, and the goal is to help you make a decision about your next steps that feels congruent and true to your best self, based on a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationship. Regardless of what you’re bringing in, and what path you choose, you will be supported with compassion and respect and encouraged to use the process as an opportunity for growth. We’ll help you get clear from your best self, with integrity and intention.
