Job searching in your comfort zone just doesn't work well if you want your search to go faster.
Because you're not used to job search strategies designed to make your search fast ... Instead, you're used to the average strategies taught by outplacement, most career coaches/authors, and professional resume writers.
And what used to work during an easy job market isn't enough to overcome the massive competition when 90-110M job seekers are trying to change jobs, when employers expect 5-10 qualified candidates competing for each interview spot (plus all the unqualified applicants).
It's tough to get out of your comfort zone, because it's what you're used to, and it's what everyone else does. Plus, you've been taught these average resume/job search strategies that keep you in your comfort zone by outplacement, most career coaches/authors, and professional resume writers use them, even though they slow your job search.
Here are a few ways to start getting out of your job search comfort zone:
- Don't Settle For A Resume That Describes You As Qualified: Qualified isn't enough in today's competitive job market. Most resumes focus employers on qualifications/responsibilities/job descriptions/tasks ... which makes you look average. By focusing your reader on impact, you prove success (rather than forcing your reader to guess).
- Stop Applying Online: For most positions being hired now and posted online, the hiring manager has already decided who they want to hire, made an offer, or even has already started the new hire for that job. They use job boards for interviews to show compliance with employment laws - often after an offer has been made and accepted. Job boards are also used to develop a pipeline of candidates who might be hired when the employer can hire again ... whenever or if that might ever happen. This makes for a long job search.
- Avoid HR: HR employees are not your friends and their job isn't to try to get you hired. Their job is to help the employer and hiring manager: Funneling all resumes into the ATS, finding an exact fit for the hiring manager's needs, and keeping candidates far away from the hiring manager. They're great at being a really nice roadblock to your job search.
- Make Your Networking More Effective: Random networking through your contacts, LinkedIn, networking groups, and industry associations are too random to work well during a competitive job market. To make your job search faster during a recession, you need to get out of your comfort zone, change your networking process to make it more effective, while scaling your networking contacts in a focused, targeted way.
I help people solve the most difficult job search problems, including job search acceleration, getting past ATSs, ageism, remote positions, product/job function/career/industry/ geographic change, unemployment, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, seeking raise/promotion, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues.
