Finding the Expert to Help You
David Morgan April 2024
Results from our recent candidate poll suggested that 91% of jobseekers were finding the market more difficult than "straightforward".
85% indicated the market was Challenging or Impossible with 7% putting off their job search this year.
This is reflected in our data too, with over 50 applications per advertised job in Q1. It is not news that competition is fierce and processes take longer - so how can a relationship with a professional recruiter give you an edge?
You have a current CV and you are actively looking for a new role, you have a list of your priorities and negotiables, so...
Time is Scarce: Pick an Expert Wisely:
Ask around:
Reach out to professionals in your network and ask for recommendations. They might have worked with headhunters in the past and can provide valuable insights. Pick a consultant not a company. Who has the understanding, experience, knowledge and reputation in your field?
Check Message Boards and Job Sites:
Explore industry-specific message boards or forums. Who is posting relevant content and who have visible opportunities? Which consultants have a track record of experience and can be trusted with your search?
Start a Dialogue:
Do not be afraid to make the first approach, do not wait for them to message you. Headhunters stay informed about market trends, challenges, and expectations and will be happy to share insight. Remember this is a two way relationship and chemistry is important from both sides.

Be Honest:
A long term relationship must be based on transparency and openness. There is little point in trying to bluff or exaggerate salary or skills. Prepare and share your objectives and ambitions, your motivations and non negotiables.
Ask Questions:
Where can they add value? Is your CV good enough, ask about the market, do they have contacts at your list of target organisations, what interview guidance can they give, does your compensation package reflect market rates, where are the hot spots and current trends?
Take Advice:
Remember that a professional recruiter will give you a snapshot of current vacancies but will also have an insight into market developments and upcoming vacancies. Be prepared to listen to guidance and make adjustments where necessary.
Follow Up:
After submitting an application or completing an interview, send a polite follow-up email to reiterate your interest and summarize why you’re a good fit.
Remember, persistence and a positive attitude often make a big difference in your job search journey.
Stay in Touch:
Regular contact and messaging is essential to stay front of mind with a recruitment professional. Some vacancies are confidential and there may well be something on the near horizon that will be of interest.
