FIRE Safety 4.0

▇ ▇ ▇ ▇

We are in the age of the fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0. The concepts of Industry 4.0 are being applied to safety management and are described as Fire Safety 4.0.

As the industry has moved to the “connected systems” era, the elements in the Fire safety system have become more interconnected via multiple communication protocols.

In an Industry 4.0 “smart connected operation,” the real-time system data is used to more quickly anticipate possible critical events, such as potential disasters and the need to take corrective action with the safety equipment.

Smart connected operations combine the traditional practices of protection, automation, manufacturing, and industrial management with the latest in intelligent and self-diagnosing technology. This provides greater control and the opportunity to diagnose problems without human intervention.

The key benefits of a smart fault-tolerant Industry 4.0 Fire Safety system are:

Ability to integrate the fire and gas safety system with the process control system

Higher survivability

Remote diagnostic capability

Predictive maintenance

Industry 4.0 gives owners and operators of high-hazard facilities the ability to improve operating efficiency and respond faster to events.

Compliant fire and gas safety systems that detect flames and gases activate notification and suppression devices, and monitor equipment for maintenance issues can relay information in real-time, without fail, to wherever the operator is located.

Industry 4.0 technologies can provide the tools to help meet those requirements. The architecture of an Industry 4.0 fire and gas safety system comprises “smart” fire, gas, flame, and smoke detectors configured on a fault-tolerant, redundant and bi-directional topology.

These inter-connected technologies give facility officials the ability to integrate with the process control system and ensure a greater probability of survivability in case of an event. Smart sensors provide real-time information anytime, anywhere.

Remote diagnostics identify an issue without requiring on-site inspection. These state-of-the-art fire and gas safety systems can apply the power of Industry 4.0 to risk mitigation and protection.

Safety 4.0 also facilitates the automation of compliance with regulations, standards, and certifications, which is particularly valuable when facing evolving requirements.

Fire Safety 4.0 requires the introduction of new safety philosophies, more use of sensors to monitor process conditions and the integrity of safety systems, remote equipment automation, digital enhancements to improve human/machine interfaces, the integration of systems, advanced use of sensor data and data analytics, metrics that go beyond the use of simple leading and lagging indicators, and the use of cloud-based safety services.

THE INDUSTRY FOUR & 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘𝗧𝗬 𝟰.𝟬

■ How can we ignore the digitization of Fire Safety, when every industry is being digitized? In line with Industry 4.0, the term Fire Safety 4.0 implies the 4th evolution in the Fire Safety system.

■ Since its inception as an industry, Fire Safety has seen many changes – from water & sand buckets in the 18th Century to Cloud and IoT connectivity in the 21st Century.

■ Technology is the future & the latest cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, Blockchain, IoT & Cloud are dramatically transforming the industries such as manufacturing, retail, automotive, etc.

■ Even the Fire Safety industry can greatly benefit from these. It is just a matter of the industry professionals & the experts adopting these quickly & enjoy the benefits of the transformation.

■ The Fire industry is known to adopt the new changes as soon as they are introduced & the people working in this industry are quite adaptable to new methods and techniques to detect, fight & suppress a Fire.

THE INDUSTRY FOUR & 𝟰 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝟰.𝟬

■ The Fire Safety industry is using technology to its maximum utilization in furthering the cause of detection, prevention & suppression of Fire. The future of Fire Safety 4.0 is dependent upon the following four technology drivers:

𝟭. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀

■ The use of intelligent sensors provides the backbone to the connected Fire Safety system. These sensors can be used for detecting gas leakages or the presence of flammable gases. The hydrant & sprinkler systems can be sensor operated which can detect the water pressure, flow, and levels and activate those accordingly.

𝟮. 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴

■ Cloud Computing and Connectivity are set to change all industries including the Fire Safety industry. These technologies help in improving the connectivity between man and machine. The continuous data generated by the sensors can be effectively and safely stored in the cloud. The data on the cloud is accessible from anywhere, anytime, all the time.

𝟯. 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆

■ Blockchain technology is a digital ledger that lets one store and shares data and information through the internet. Blockchain technology in the Fire Safety industry can help in streamlining data and communication between contractors, manufacturers, AMC providers, insurance companies & users.

𝟰. 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

■ Artificial Intelligence is turning around the ways in which industries can operate. Sticking to the Fire Prevention Industry, AI can play a big role in changing the way this industry operates. There are several things that can be done in preventing a Fire with the help of artificial intelligence.
