A First generation Lawyer

A First generation Lawyer

The legal profession continues to wobble and alter to the obligatory, Covid-19 culture-shock that has substituted the way the profession works at an unparalleled speed-of-change. Having shifted from chiefly in-the-office-working – to home-working, nocturnal – and more recently on to a new and unfamiliar hybrid-working world, the shift in working patterns is only part of the story. Law firms currently face a number of other significant challenges.

Who is a First generation Lawyer?

A first-generation lawyer is someone who is the first in their family to pursue a career in law. They do not have any prior family members who are lawyers or have experience in the legal profession. No prior cases, no chambers and above all zero connections.

Problems faced by First Generation Lawyers while starting their career.

Starting a career in law can be challenging for first-generation lawyers due to several factors. Here are some of the significant problems faced by first-generation lawyers:

1.        Self made:

First-generation lawyers often have to start their legal careers from scratch. They do not have the benefit of a family member or relative to guide them or help them get started. This can be a significant disadvantage as they have to learn the ins and outs of the legal profession on their own.

2.        Lack of financial support:

Starting an independent litigation practice requires significant capital. However, first-generation lawyers often lack the financial resources to start their own practice. This can limit their options and force them to work for established law firms or take on low-paying jobs.

3.        No networking and connections:

Legal networks are essential for building a successful legal career. However, first-generation lawyers often lack the connections and networking opportunities that come with a family background in the legal profession. This can make it challenging for them to find clients and build a reputation in the legal industry.

4.        Limited access to resources:

First-generation lawyers often lack access to resources such as legal databases, research materials, and other tools that are essential for legal practice. This can hinder their ability to provide high-quality legal services to their clients and limit their opportunities for professional growth.

5.        Social stigma:

In some cases, first-generation lawyers may face social stigma and discrimination from their peers and colleagues in the legal profession. This can make it challenging for them to establish themselves and gain acceptance in the legal community.

What could be done to overcome these challenges?

To overcome these challenges, first-generation lawyers can look for out mentorship and guidance from more experienced lawyers, who have build their own networks, and take advantage of the resources and opportunities available to them. They can also consider alternative paths, such as working in legal aid organisations or pursue alternative legal careers.

1.        Networking:

Building a strong network is essential for any lawyer, and it is even more critical for first-generation lawyers. They can join professional organisations, attend legal events, and build relationships with other lawyers and legal professionals to expand their network.

2.        Seeking mentorship:

Seeking mentorship from more experienced lawyers can help first-generation lawyers navigate the legal profession and provide guidance and support. They can seek mentorship from law school professors, senior lawyers, or alumni from their law school.

3.        Investing in legal education:

First-generation lawyers should invest in their legal education by attending conferences, workshops, and seminars. This will help them stay up-to-date with the latest legal developments, expand their knowledge and skills, and build their reputation in the legal community.

4.        Building a brand:

First-generation lawyers should focus on building their personal brand to differentiate themselves from their competitors. They can create a website, blog, or social media presence to showcase their expertise and attract potential clients.

5.        Pursuing alternative legal careers:

First-generation lawyers can consider pursuing alternative legal careers, such as legal consulting, legal writing, or working in legal aid organisations. This will help them gain experience and build their reputation in the legal profession.

6.        Continuous learning:

Continuous learning is essential for any lawyer, and it is even more critical for first-generation lawyers who lack the advantage of a family background in the legal profession. They should continually seek opportunities to learn and grow, such as attending legal conferences or seminars and taking courses to develop new skills.

7. Be techno friendly:

Embrace yourself with legal technology and get involved with streaming your legal knowledge online. Invest in legal software and reach a wider audience.

8. Be your client's friend:

Maintaining a client is an essential technique and to sustain it build a trust worthy relationship with your client, so as to gain more referrals and build a sense of empathy.

9. Patience:

For a first generation lawyer patience is the key. Don't compare yourself with others. Stay calm and focused you might have to work harder on the initial stage but you yourself will build a strong network and sustain it with your own capabilities.

10. Don't give up:

You have to walk the road alone but better not walk backwards. If certain things don't work out your way, change the path, open a new door and reach the top following another tactic.
