First time on TV? Here are some tips

First time on TV? Here are some tips

Being on TV is great if you’re trying to promote a business. Despite the internet growing every single day, classical media formats still hold a lot of weight and can make a name famous practically overnight.

However, that also means that your first time on TV can be a stressful event due to the pressure of getting everything just right. Luckily, that’s easier to accomplish than one might think. To prove that, here are some basic practical tips for your first time on air.

Eye Contact

Such a simple trick, yet so powerful. On your first interview, there will be a very real temptation to face the camera or let yourself get distracted by all that’s going on around you and behind the cameras.

In order to beat this temptation, remember to focus your attention on the interviewer, your brain will naturally ignore everything else, and you will naturally relax and have an easier time expressing yourself.

If the interview is going to be happening remotely, just treat the camera on your computer like it was the interviewer themselves, as that will give the audience the impression that you are looking straight at them.

Straighten your back and puff your chest

This is a very easy trick to gain some instantaneous confidence. Straightening your back makes you grow a few inches taller, and puffing your chest spreads your shoulders, making you look overall bigger and more “solid”.

These physical changes have been proven to make you feel bigger, which instinctively boosts your confidence and helps you articulate yourself better than you normally would.

Ask About the story beforehand

Information is also key to performing well in an interview, so before you go live, or they start recording, ask the reporter what the story is about and who their target audience is, or better yet, have that on lock from the very beginning.

This will give you time to think about your answers and maybe even record yourself to get an idea of what to improve before going to the interview itself. “Winging it” is extremely overrated (and not recommendable).

Wear plain clothes

Dark clothes look especially good on TV, but if that doesn’t fit your brand, feel free to wear something a bit more lively. What you do want to avoid are patterns like checkers, stripes, plaids, and things of the sort as they tend to be distracting and can mess up the TV colors.

Don’t Freak Out

In taped interviews, it’s very common for the interviewer to ask the same questions over and over again. They do this in order to get more interesting or complete answers, but sometimes, that can make you feel like you’re being put against the wall.

Now, if you are being put against the wall, or the reporter is being somehow confrontational, decline the answer or shift the focus back to your core message. A good linguistic trigger for this are phrases like “it’s important to remember that…” and variations of such.
