Five misconceptions about Voice over Internet Protocol – and the truth
Using the internet for voice calls (Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP) can be a cheaper option than using traditional lines. VoIP phone systems also offer many useful features that you can’t otherwise access.
In any event, BT will switch off the old copper wire network in 2025, so everyone needs to have an alternative in place by then. So we thought we’d clear up a few common misconceptions about VoIP, and set the record straight.
Myth 1: VoIP is less reliable and has low call quality
To be fair, in the early days of VoiP calls often had poor sound quality, but these days it is vastly improved. VoIP can now provide calls with crystal clear audio, and with no lag or interference, as long your internet connection is up to the job.
As for reliability, calls are now connected through several data centres across multiple locations, so one outage doesn’t affect the service.
Myth 2: VoIP is more expensive
On the contrary, the financial benefits are one of the main reasons to go digital. For one thing, it removes the need to rent dedicated phone lines. Also, VoIP’s are priced per user, and are very easily scalable as the business’s needs change. The number of lines can be increased or decreased at the click of a button.
VoIP is also much simpler. It removes the need for separate phonelines and mobiles – allowing businesses to be available on just one number. And it enables you to combine all of your comms 10 channels into one application, which can be accessed from a range of devices (both static and mobile).

Myth 3: making calls over the internet isn’t secure
Technology has advanced rapidly in recent years. Digital phonelines are contained within an internal system, so they are just as secure as the organisation’s whole IT infrastructure.
Myth 4: you’ll have to change your phone number
This is simply incorrect. You can use your existing number or change – it’s up to you. And because you can use the same number on multiple devices, VoIP is a great help if you want to use flexible or remote working.
Myth 5: the process of changing is difficult
With our partners, we’ll handle installation and setup, along with ongoing management. You’ll be up and running quickly and with minimal effort on your side.
