Five Proven Methods to Increase Team Retention

Five Proven Methods to Increase Team Retention

In today’s ever-changing workplace, one of the biggest challenges leaders face is retaining top talent. It’s not just about compensation, perks, or titles—what truly matters is creating and nurturing authentic relationships with team members. Building these relationships fosters trust, loyalty, and long-term success. After years of working with executives and teams, I’ve identified five characteristics of authentic relationships that drive retention. Let’s dive into how you can incorporate these into your leadership.

1. The Wingmaker: Giving People Wings to Fly

As a leader, your most rewarding achievement should be your team's success. The best leaders, like Chad Greenleaf, SVP of Client Services at AppsFlyer, define themselves as force multipliers. During one of our conversations, Chad shared with me, “My responsibility is to know my team—what motivates them, what they fear, what they aspire to. Only through this understanding can I advocate for their success.”

Being a Wingmaker means providing opportunities for your team to grow, supporting their career trajectories, and unlocking their hidden potential. The foundation of this relationship is trust. Without it, any efforts to develop someone will feel transactional and manipulative.

Ask yourself, are you truly empowering your team, or are you focused on what they can do for you?

2. The Connection Conjurer: Honest Conversations Matter

It’s easy to get caught up in the analytics of leading a team—KPIs, deadlines, and objectives. But don’t forget that your team is made up of humans, and humans crave connection. Fostering honest, transparent conversations is key.

Ask your team the right questions to spark positive emotions:

  • What do you love most about working here?
  • Who at work brings joy to your day?

By asking these questions, you encourage openness, and when people feel seen and heard, they’re more willing to stay and grow with you.

3. The Value Virtuoso: Protect the Value in Your People

Leaders who are Value Virtuosos see the unique qualities in their team members and fiercely protect those qualities, even when others might challenge or undervalue them. One of my clients, Joe, struggled with people-pleasing tendencies that hindered his sales success. He knew he had the skills but wasn’t seeing the results because he constantly put others’ needs above his own.

Through our work, Joe learned the power of setting boundaries, allowing him to thrive.

As leaders, it’s our job to recognize when someone’s value is being compromised and help them protect it. When people feel valued and understood, they’re less likely to seek opportunities elsewhere.

4. The Growth Shaman: Learning Together

There’s a powerful quote that says, “The best leaders are those who are willing to learn from their teams.” Growth doesn’t just happen top-down; it’s a reciprocal relationship. The Growth Shaman mindset encourages leaders to embrace learning from others.

When I first started consulting, I thought my role was to provide quick solutions. I learned very quickly that my clients didn’t want answers—they wanted the opportunity to explore their thoughts and uncover their own solutions. Asking the right questions is crucial:

  • How is that an issue for you?
  • What would you rather experience instead?

When leaders cultivate a growth-oriented environment, retention soars because team members feel empowered to develop and contribute in meaningful ways.

5. The Hope Master: Pushing Beyond Comfort Zones

Lastly, a Hope Master is someone who challenges their team to step outside of what’s familiar and comfortable. Real growth doesn’t happen in the safe zone. But pushing people beyond their comfort zones requires faith—not only in your team’s potential but also in the relationship you’ve built with them.

Encourage your team to embrace new challenges by reminding them that discomfort is necessary for success. Guide them in navigating their fears, and they will reward you with loyalty.

Incorporating these five methods into your leadership style will lead to higher engagement, satisfaction, and ultimately, retention. When your team feels supported, valued, and challenged, they’re not just employees—they’re your advocates, partners, and champions.

Have a WINNING day!
