FIVE QUALITIES OF A GREAT LEADER

FIVE QUALITIES OF A GREAT LEADER

The last two years of global uncertainty have unveiled what kind of leaders we have and are. This has been an unexpected gift because we see both what’s commendable and what’s missing. What defines excellent leadership? Do you recognize it when you see it?

 Empathy

Great leaders see people for who they are, not just for what they do or give. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. This means acknowledging the stresses, fears, joys, and sorrows of our shared human experience.

 Integrity

Integrity is being whole and undivided. It’s being an example in all things, role modeling what you expect of others. As a familiar saying goes, “Integrity is who you are when no one is watching.”

 Honesty

Great leaders keep everyone informed of what is going on within an organization, be it good or bad. Honesty is manifested in personal behavior, decisions, and open communication.

 Humility

Excellent leaders are secure enough to admit what they don’t know. Humble leaders confront important issues without blaming others. They understand they are part of a structure bigger than themselves.

 Trust

All the leadership qualities above lead to trust. Great leaders earn the trust of the people who follow them by being accessible, supportive, and dependable. Trust is essential to motivate others and lead them through difficult situations.

Let these challenging times mold you into the leader people need you to be. What do you think is the most important quality in a great leader?
