Five Year Goals don't have to be about your job to work.
Still working on your 2017 "life goals plan?"
If you're like me, you have trouble picking and sticking with a 5 year goal. "But I don't know what I want to do TODAY! How will I know what I want in FIVE YEARS?" I feel that. None of my five year goals have panned out. My life has always been in flux. If you work in tech, you probably won't have the same job in two years let alone five.
So here's a hot tip: the five year goal thing doesn't have to be about your job. It can be about your family, your home, your overall state of being. What kind of life do you want in five years? Do you want to be able to buy your dinner from the fancy grocery store once a week (a real goal of mine at one point)? Or maybe you want to see your extended family every holiday. Or be able to sing at your friends' weddings.
All of these are great goals. And they will help you realize and prioritize what is important to you—which will inform the career decisions you will make in an uncertain market.
