Flights Halted After UK Heat Wave Melts London Luton Airport Runway

A runway at one of UK's main airports melted as a result of Britain's excessive heatwave, frustrating airline travellers having their travel plans postponed.

According to The Sun, the temporary suspension of flights at London Luton Airport, 45 kilometres north of the UK capital, caused havoc for families taking summer vacations.

The UK's fifth busiest airport is London Luton.

According to Luton airport authorities, there was a "surface fault" brought on by Monday's weather, which saw the temperature jump to 38C in certain parts of the country.

Elsewhere, as the UK struggled to deal with the weather on Monday, the runway "melted" at the RAF Brize Norton military air base in Oxfordshire, west of London.

As the temperature reached 37.5C at West London's Kew Gardens, the British public was advised to stay inside.

"Due to today's extreme heat, a surface problem was discovered on the runway." In a statement, London Luton Airport stated:

"Engineers were summoned right away to the location, and repairs are now being made in order to restart operations as quickly as feasible.

"We sincerely apologise for the trouble this has caused."

Staff members were seen working on a section of the runway in images from the BBC.

There is only one runway at the airport, which mostly serves flights to tourist areas in Europe. Flights are reportedly redirected to other airports nearby.
