We've all been there. Looking on with envy as another entrepreneur becomes an overnight success. All of a sudden, and out of nowhere they start creating the kind of sales, success, and reputation that we can only dream of.

Yet instead of asking what they did to create that success, all too often we start comparing our own performance to theirs - and not in a good way. We look at our own businesses and wonder what we're doing wrong, judge ourselves for not reaching the same dizzy heights. Worse, we desperately want to find out the 'trick', the single secret that we can replicate and create the same success in our own business.

Does this sound familiar to you? If it does, I empathise, because I've been there. And I know just how demoralising it can feel when it feels like everybody else knows the secret to success - except you.

Which is why today I want to share with you the REAL secret to creating 'overnight' success and how you can start right now.

How I discovered the secret

Back in 2021 I was approached by a good friend and colleague to help him write an article about a global project he had led at the start of the pandemic, involving more than 50 academics and professionals - all giving their time and expertise for free - and launched in just 5 weeks.

Yet as I read the story of how this success had been created - I was struck by one very important fact. That it couldn't have happened without a career spent learning, developing relationships, powerful networks, high quality research, and effective leadership skills.

So we ended up writing the article about how to create an overnight success (in 20 years).

Or as Steve Martin puts it...

"I did stand-up comedy for eighteen years. Ten of those years were spent learning, four years were spent refining, and four were spent in wild success."

Look under the surface...

The truth is, your business is like an iceberg, or a tree. Most of the foundation, the work, the effort, the growth lies under the surface, often unseen (even by yourself). Which is the risk when you compare your own business to other people's - because you can't see everything they've been through, everything they've done to create that success.

I remember when I was in my first year in business, and somebody told me that it might take a couple of years before things really got going. This was the LAST thing I wanted to hear - I wanted success and I wanted it NOW. More, I judged myself negatively because I wasn't creating the sales and income that I thought I should have.

Yet almost 3 years into my business, I now know what it takes to create an 'overnight' success because I did it in March of this year when I created almost £14,000 in sales from my first ever webinar (with a tiny email list and after getting hit by the LinkedIn algorithm change). Nobody was more surprised than me, yet it all came about from the 6 steps that I'm going to share with you later in this article.

Why many businesses fail

I read a truly terrifying statistic recently - 82% of coaching businesses, and 80% of new consultancies fail in the first 2 years. A large part of that is down to not being taught how to market effectively, but it goes deeper than that.

Business owners are not taught how to lay strong foundations through investment, learning, growth, networking, support, and connecting with their audience. They are not taught that patience, courage, and faith are critical to success. They are attracted by 'get rich quick' schemes which promise instant clients, sales, and money - then are devastated when these schemes prove to be built on air.

The tragedy is that many business owners give up too soon - before all the work they have done is able to bear fruit.

The REAL secret

Which is why I want to talk about the REAL secret to success. It may not be glamorous, and chances are it's not what you want to hear. Yet when you ask any successful person, they'll tell you the same thing.

Because the REAL secret is to show up and plant seeds every single day. To do the work, even when it feels like you're going nowhere. To keep nurturing and growing your ideas. To trying and failing and trying and failing again and again until you discover what works. To invest in continuous growth and learning, and have courage that you're doing all the right things to create success.

And, rather than judge yourself when you see others' success, be INSPIRED, because if they can do it, so can you.

How YOU can create your own 'overnight' success

Creating an 'overnight' success in your own business requires a combination of powerful business strategies and a DARING Mindset. Here are 6 essential steps to help you create the kind of success that I KNOW you deserve:

Step 1: Embrace a growth mindset based on continuous improvement, and resilience. See challenges as opportunities for growth rather than as setbacks. Treat everything you do as an experiment so that there can be no failure. A growth mindset allows you to adapt, innovate, and keep going in the face of obstacles.

Step 2: Set DARING goals and BELIEVE that you can reach them. It takes more energy to keep persuading yourself that you CAN'T succeed than it does to simply let go and believe. So visualise a powerful goal, then create the self-discipline and focus that will enable you to make success a HABIT.

Step 3: INVEST in your growth and your business. Always have a coach who opens your mind to possibility - and shows you how to get to the next level of success. Someone who can teach you the skills you need, stop you overthinking, and keep you accountable for taking action.

Step 4: Surround yourself with people who INSPIRE you. This was probably the single biggest factor both in my success and in me not giving up when things were hard. Network with people who are already where you want to be and pay attention to everything they do to create success.

Step 5: Build a strong relationship with your audience. Commit to always giving value in your content and your engagement. Seek to find out everything you can about what your audience wants and needs, and help them find their REAL problems. This way you build an audience of raving fans, and can create offers that they WANT to buy.

Step 6: Be a NEW OPPORTUNITY for your audience. Show them why you are DIFFERENT, how you bring something to the table that NOBODY else does. Help your audience see how and why YOU can help them, even if they have tried and failed many times.

...Keep on going, keep trusting that when you're following these steps, you're building the conditions for your own 'overnight' success! Because one day you'll suddenly look around you and realise that it just happened...!
