What Is Food Allergy?

A food allergy is when our body’s immune system reacts to certain food ingredients and takes them as harmful. Sometimes even a small amount of allergy-causing food may trigger these symptoms.

There are a total of 9 types of foods that cause food allergies.

A study published in the Allergen Bureau on food allergy conducted for adults in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia revealed just over 17 percent percent positive for food allergy (FA). Some of the most predominant food allergens were eggs about (47%), seafood, and fruits 44% & and 40% respectively.

How Many Food Allergens Are There?

Majority of the food-related allergies are triggered by certain proteins in these 9 types of foods we call them Allergens.

  1.  Fish
  2.  Crustacean shellfish
  3. Tree Nuts
  4. Peanuts
  5. Wheat
  6. Soybean
  7. Sesame seeds
  8. Milk
  9. Eggs

Causes of Allergy

According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) latest report, the actual reason for allergy is still unknown. They believe family history, genetics, and age are some aspects of allergy development. Young children are more prone to develop allergies than old children and adults.

Symptoms

For some people, these symptoms are mild but can be life-threatening to others. Symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to several hours after taking the offending food.

Common Signs and symptoms after taking offensive food are below:

  • Wheezing, troubled breathing, or nasal congestion
  • Irritation, hives, or eczema.
  • Fainting in severe cases, dizziness, etc.
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting or nausea
  • Swelling of the face, lips, throat, or any other part of the body

Sometimes, food allergy can trigger severe or life-threatening allergic reactions which are called Anaphylaxis. Its symptoms may be like,

  •  Severely low blood pressure may cause shock (“Anaphylactic shock”)
  • Throat swelling may cause suffocation

Now, this is important to control happening of food allergies by understanding their symptoms.

 Food Allergy Safety

To protect yourself or your loved ones from food allergies. Take these measures;

 i) Read Food Label

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) Act of 2004 listed American food labeling requirements. In which 8 types of food allergens are identified on the label. While 9th allergen (sesame) is also declared now and effective from 1st Jan, 2023.

ii) Make sure to read the label carefully before purchasing.

Always Carry First Aid

If you are allergic then your doctor may prescribe you an Epinephrine pen. This is a first-line defense against anaphylaxis.

iii) Report Labeling Concerns

If you find any product or mislabel which not provide you with complete allergen information you get a reaction. You can complain to your local food regulatory bodies like in UAE, Dubai municipality is responsible for compliance with food standards.

Conclusion:

To conclude, 9 foods may trigger food allergies in any individual if they have taken it and awareness about these foods is very important to control of these symptoms.

Consumers must develop the habit of reading product labels especially allergen declaration statements to avoid foods that are allergic to avoid adverse health effects and where there is an emergency must report to a physician and also raise concern to authorities if label declaration is not there for these allergens.
