Food for Thought: Join the #Safe2EatEU Conference on Sustainable Practice

In an era marked by significant food waste and safety concerns, Business Review is spearheading the #Safe2EatEU, Food Safety in Romania, conference, scheduled for August 6. This pivotal event, supported by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), aims to cast a spotlight on sustainable practices in the food industry, addressing crucial issues such as safe food additives, allergens, and food waste.

Annually, the European Union sees over 58 million tonnes of food wasted, translating to approximately 131 kg per inhabitant and a staggering market value of 132 billion euros, highlighting the urgency and significance of this conference.

"Across Europe, every day, citizens choose what to buy and what to eat, considering various factors such as cost, taste, sustainability, or the origin of food. Thanks to the high standards of food safety in the EU, they can be assured that, regardless of their choices, the food they purchase and consume is safe. The #EUSafe2Eat campaign aims to connect food safety science with the food that ends up on our tables, allowing people to make confident decisions about their food," stated Bernhard Url , Executive Director of EFSA said according to a press release from ANSVSA.

The #Safe2EatEU campaign is part of a broader European initiative conducted in 18 EU countries, designed to enhance public awareness and understanding of food safety issues critical to consumer health and environmental sustainability. The event will feature a diverse panel including authorities, stakeholders, experts, and private sector actors, all collaborating to tackle the complex issues surrounding food waste and safety.

“As part of this campaign, we aim to assure citizens on one hand that regulation in this field is always based on science, and on the other hand that the presence of food allergens in allergenic products that could cause intolerance is strictly checked by the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA),” says Alexandru Bociu, President of ANSVSA.

"Allergens represent a food safety risk, therefore we pay special attention in the production of this subject and have very clear procedures for managing the use of allergens in production to prevent cross-contamination. Cross-contamination can occur accidentally, and in these situations, as a precaution, we ensure that allergic individuals are informed, and the packaging of the products will include the mention "the product may contain allergens," explained Lidia Nica, Executive Director of Romalimenta.

“At Bonapp, we are committed to helping companies reduce food waste while aligning with their business objectives," says Luka Zivkovic , Co-Founder of BonApp .

The rise in food allergies and the scientific approaches required to manage them effectively will also be a focal point. Moreover, the event will highlight strategies for reducing food waste, promoting recycling, and sustainable resource use, reflecting cutting-edge topics of great relevance and importance.

The event promises to gather experts, academic minds, and representatives from both consumer protection and national food safety authorities, alongside significant private sector stakeholders, to discuss and share best practices and industry challenges.
