Food for thoughts: Elon Musk's 5-Step protocol for successful engineering.
Wondering what building a spaceship has to do with your next automation project? Maybe more than you think!
In our daily work, we frequently encounter production environments in which processes have been in place for many years and in some cases offer great potential for optimisation.
This may be in logistics, where material has to be handled, stored or retrieved multiple times before the finished product is created. Or we receive user requirement specifications in which, for example, an EX-zone is defined - even though it is not necessary and causes the project costs to rise exorbitantly. So, wouldn't it make sense to rethink processes and thus exploit the possible potential? Questioning requirements to determine if they are really necessary? To take the courage and break up old models?
We know how highly regulated the pharmaceutical industry is (GxP, etc) so we are aware that the 5 steps are not easy to implement and should rather be seen as a thought-provoking impulse for new ideas.
Elon Musk's 5-Step protocol for successful engineering is certainly an interesting approach to tackling such challenges- enjoy the video from 13:28 for the relevant section.
MAKE THE REQUIREMENTS LESS DUMB
TRY AND DELETE PART OF THE PROCESS
SIMPLIFY OR OPTIMIZE
ACCELERATE CYCLE TIME
AUTOMATE
