Forests of Ukraine: Record-Breaking Achievements in Tree Planting, Fire Prevention, and Economic Growth

In a recent statement, Yuriy Bolokhovets, a representative of the Forests of Ukraine State Enterprise (DP "Forests of Ukraine"), highlighted the remarkable accomplishments achieved during a five-month period of intensive work. The enterprise has achieved significant milestones in various areas, including the successful planting of 111.1 million trees, a commendable reduction in forest fire incidents, and positive economic growth. Let's delve into the details of these accomplishments and their implications.

Forest Restoration and Fire Prevention:

One of the key achievements of DP "Forests of Ukraine" has been the remarkable pace of tree planting and forest regeneration. In comparison to the previous year, the sovereign lіsgospah (forest management) witnessed a staggering increase of 74 times in the area covered by trees, amounting to an impressive 103.7 hectares. This significant change in the landscape reflects the dedication and effectiveness of the forestry personnel.

Moreover, the forest fire prevention measures implemented by DP "Forests of Ukraine" have yielded exceptional results. The organization's efforts in fire protection have led to a record reduction in both the number of fire incidents and the affected area. With the implementation of improved fire management techniques, including the strategic placement of wooden boards in critical areas, the enterprise has successfully curbed the annual spread of fires. In the first five months of 2022 alone, 45 major fires were recorded, covering an area exceeding 5 hectares. In contrast, the corresponding period in 2023 saw only four such incidents.

Preservation Efforts Beyond Forests:

Recognizing the interconnectedness of ecosystems, DP "Forests of Ukraine" has extended its protective efforts beyond forests alone. The enterprise's firefighters actively engage in safeguarding natural ecosystems such as fields, wetlands, peat bogs, and rural areas neighboring the forests. Over the past year, approximately 734 interventions have been conducted across a 380-hectare open area, reinforcing the commitment to conservation and biodiversity preservation.

Economic Growth and Sustainability:

DP "Forests of Ukraine" has witnessed significant economic growth during the five-month period, with three main trends highlighting the enterprise's achievements:

  1. Increased Sale of Uncultivated Wood: The enterprise has experienced stable growth in the sale of uncultivated wood, with a notable increase of 33% in the first five months of the year. Similarly, the sale of grass has witnessed a growth rate of 40% during the same period. This surge in sales is a testament to the enterprise's efficient resource management and ability to provide a sufficient supply of high-quality wood at competitive prices.
  2. Rising Prices and Income: DP "Forests of Ukraine" has also benefited from an upward trend in timber prices. Although the income from the sale of uncultivated wood increased by 13% in the first five months, the growth rate accelerated to 30% in the grassland sector. In 2023, the enterprise generated an income of UAH 2.1 billion from grass sales, compared to UAH 1.6 billion in the corresponding period of 2022. These results underscore the balanced economic strategy employed by DP "Forests of Ukraine" and its ability to adapt to market dynamics.
  3. Transformation for Sustainability: The enterprise has embarked on a transformational journey to address unprofitable production sectors systematically. Despite selling fewer wet lumber units (43,000 m3) compared to 2022 (80,000 m3), the income from these sales has not significantly impacted the overall economic performance of DP "Forests of Ukraine." This transition provides opportunities to diversify the enterprise's activities, focusing on alternative sectors such as the sale of national center products and the development of recreational facilities.

Forests of Ukraine: DP "Forests of Ukraine" as the Leading State Enterprise in Forest Reform

DP "Forests of Ukraine," established as the sole state enterprise under the forest reform initiative, plays a crucial role in protecting and preserving forests, promoting sustainable forest management practices, and ensuring the effective utilization of forest resources. The enterprise's priorities encompass conserving and expanding forest areas, optimizing resource utilization, achieving high profitability, and providing support to the armed forces. With a well-structured organization and a commitment to digital transformation, DP "Forests of Ukraine" sets a benchmark for forest management in line with European practices.

DP "Forests of Ukraine" operates through a hierarchical structure comprising a central office, nine regional offices (including one near Crimea), and 150 branches (including 14 specialized teams). This widespread presence enables efficient forest management and ensures effective coordination of activities across different regions. The enterprise has already obtained 150 permits from the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU) for concentration purposes, facilitating streamlined operations. Furthermore, the transition to Family of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifications promotes sustainable forest practices and ensures compliance with international standards.

The establishment of a single state enterprise for forest management does not imply the privatization of Ukrainian forests. On the contrary, it is in line with the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Law of Ukraine on the privatization of state and communal property. The consolidation of forest management functions under DP "Forests of Ukraine" leads to enhanced economic outcomes, increased investment opportunities, and the adoption of innovative technologies. The streamlined business processes of the enterprise facilitate transparency and standardization, aligning with best practices observed in European forest management models.

The mental reforms implemented through DP "Forests of Ukraine" contribute to the preservation of existing jobs in the forestry sector and generate increased tax revenue for public budgets. The enterprise's commitment to sustainable forest management practices not only safeguards the environment but also fosters socioeconomic stability.

DP "Forests of Ukraine" stands as a leading state enterprise within the forest reform framework. Its mission to protect and sustainably manage forests, optimize resource utilization, ensure profitability, and provide support to the armed forces underscores its significance in Ukrainian forest management.
