The Forgotten Founder
History is often one-sided; told from the perspective of the narrator. Scrounge through what’s been written and said about Orios Venture Partners in the press or in interviews or otherwise, casual mentions of the firm, and you’ll find just one person everywhere — Rehan Yar Khan. A successful entrepreneur. Who turned into a storied and sought after angel investor. A man who felt the need for a domestic fund in India. Who then went ahead and raised the largest domestic venture fund this country has ever seen. Rs 300 crore. From 130 individuals, not a single foreign investor — a mighty feat. And with that money, he then backed the dreams of several entrepreneurs in the country.
It makes for a good story.
Except, it isn't entirely true.
Farooq Oomerbhoy, 34, is thinking. Choosing his words. Carefully. He looks down, then across the long, wooden, boardroom table, staring into the silence of the room. “Nothing I’m telling you…” he starts and then stops. “…See, I’ve never spoken about this to anyone. And I want you to know that I am not disgruntled. I am not getting back at someone. You came to me and asked, ‘who are you?’ and ‘why haven’t people heard of you?’ and that’s what I want people to know. I want them to know, the work I put in to build the largest domestic venture capital fund in India. That is most important. You, understand that, right?”
"Yes."
“Okay. What do you want to know?”
"Who started Orios? Whose idea was it?"
This story by Ashish K. Mishra, my co-founder at The Ken, pulls back the curtain to tell us about a "Forgotten Founder" - a story that shows how the sausage got made for a highly lauded VC fund, a story that teaches us that in many ways a VC fund is just like a startup, subject to the same whimsical vicissitudes of fortunes and egos.
