Founder Mode: Leadership’s Most Controversial Tool – Can It Scale or Is It Doomed to Fail?
Founder Mode has sparked fierce debate in entrepreneurial circles. At the heart of the conversation is a question: is this hands-on, all-in leadership style the secret to startup success, or does it create blind spots that ultimately hinder growth? As I launch my book, Founder Mode: Leading with Resilience, Vision, and Purpose, I’ve seen firsthand how divided opinions are around this topic.
What is Founder Mode?
Founder Mode represents a deeply personal, relentless approach to leadership. Founders live and breathe their companies, staying closely involved in day-to-day operations, product development, and decision-making. This leadership style allows for quick pivots, deep customer understanding, and a laser-sharp focus on the company’s vision. Sounds ideal, right?
Well, yes and no.
The Power of Founder Mode
Many of the most iconic companies of our time—think Airbnb, Glossier, and Monzo—were built on the principles of Founder Mode. It’s the scrappiness of this approach that pushes founders to innovate, solve problems, and disrupt industries. This mode of leadership thrives on resilience, bold decision-making, and a personal connection to the product and the customer. It’s what turns ideas into unicorns.
For founders in the early stages of building a business, Founder Mode can feel like a superpower. No one understands the business as deeply as the founder, and they can make decisions quickly, adapt rapidly to market changes, and stay connected to the original vision.
But There’s a Dark Side…
Yet, as companies scale, Founder Mode starts to show cracks. Many founders become too entrenched, unwilling to delegate or step back. This lack of delegation can stifle growth, slowing the company down and creating blind spots that can derail the business. When the founder insists on being in control of everything—from product development to marketing strategy—they risk burning out and taking the business down with them.
Early hires can find it difficult, or even impossible, to challenge the founder. A toxic work culture can quickly take root, and decision-making can become driven by what will keep the founder happy rather than what is best for the product or business.
A founder’s inability to trust others with decision-making can create a bottleneck, ultimately hindering the very growth they worked so hard to achieve. At this stage, leadership needs to evolve from hands-on involvement to strategic guidance—a balance that many find hard to strike.
The Growing Divide
This tension between the benefits and risks of Founder Mode has fuelled an intense debate in the entrepreneurial world. On one side, advocates argue that it’s the only way to maintain the original passion and innovation that started the company. On the other side, critics warn that founders who cling too tightly to control will inevitably stifle innovation, alienate their teams, and fail to scale.

In the months leading up to the release of Founder Mode, particularly over the summer, I’ve watched this debate heat up. Some founders see the mode as an essential tool for navigating the early chaos of startup life. Others view it as a liability once the company reaches a certain scale, warning of burnout, megalomania ,and poor leadership decisions.
So, What’s the Answer?
Founder Mode isn’t inherently good or bad—it’s all about balance. The most successful founders learn how to evolve as their company grows. They know when to lean in and when to step back. Leadership is about empowering others to take ownership while still steering the ship with vision and purpose. The old adage of ‘hire smart people and get out of their way.’
The key is recognising when Founder Mode has outlived its usefulness. This doesn’t mean giving up control—it means focusing on the bigger picture, scaling strategically, and maintaining the original vision by empowering others.
