Founders & Investors: Label Outlaws Quickly

Founders & Investors: Label Outlaws Quickly

I recently recorded this short, two-minute video below while in Bali - that has helped us grow our business.

It dives into Cialdini’s answer to the question, “What is the master key of influence?” and explains a fundamental principle that has been central to scaling our investor club into one of the largest in the industry.

Becoming hyper-clear about what you stand for, want, and expect, along with the types of actions that have fueled your momentum, sets you apart. Many people do not operate this way.

It’s a simple concept to grasp but not always easy to apply. If you do it right, not everyone around you will appreciate it. Many of you reading this are founders, CEOs, Co-Founders, Presidents, Owners, and Investors—you’ve likely encountered this dynamic before.

The more precise I’ve become on this, the more I’ve been able to eliminate stress, confidently say no, and make decisive moves without second-guessing my direction. I’ve read 110 books by billionaires, and a common theme emerges: they expect excellence, trust in their vision, and maintain optimism despite challenging circumstances like high interest rates, political distractions, inflation, or difficult capital markets.

Bezos once said stress is knowing that you need to address something but not taking action on it, most stress is reduced once you actually put action into fixing the situation.

A Harvard Business Review article once explored the question of whether to trust your gut, concluding that it depends on what your gut is “made of.” Given your experience as a founder or investor, trusting your instincts is wise, while still being open to new perspectives and considerations. Clarify who is an “outlaw” in your world, and focus on cultivating positive relationships, valuable opportunities, and meaningful connections.

If you don't identify the laws of your town, your team, your community, you will not be able to remove outlaws quickly if at all.

Thank you for taking two minutes to watch the video below - we will be mentioning this at our Family Office Club's 650-person investor summit in Miami next month.

Scout Law:

TRUSTWORTHY. Tell the truth and keep promises. People can depend on you.

LOYAL. Show that you care about your family, friends, Scout leaders, school, and country.

HELPFUL. Volunteer to help others without expecting a reward.

FRIENDLY. Be a friend to everyone, even people who are very different from you.

COURTEOUS. Be polite to everyone and always use good manners.

KIND. Treat others as you want to be treated. Never harm or kill any living thing without good reason.

OBEDIENT. Follow the rules of your family, school, and pack. Obey the laws of your community and country.

CHEERFUL. Look for the bright side of life. Cheerfully do tasks that come your way. Try to help others be happy.

THRIFTY. Work to pay your own way. Try not to be wasteful. Use time, food, supplies, and natural resources wisely.

BRAVE. Face difficult situations even when you feel afraid. Do what you think is right despite what others might be doing or saying.

CLEAN. Keep your body and mind fit. Help keep your home and community clean.

REVERENT. Be reverent toward God. Be faithful in your religious duties. Respect the beliefs of others.

Great video! Your emphasis on clarity and focus is spot on. In my experience, leaders who prioritize these qualities see greater success in driving organizational change and building high-performing teams.

I subscribe wholeheartedly with all the values although I have a few reservations about the last one. Perhaps it could be more inclusive?

I don’t often read Linkdin Posts because so many are drivel but this is so well done. A great way to put “if you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything” “say your name before someone gives you one” and “if you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love anyone else”
