Four programs that help young women get started in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

Progress has been made in recent decades towards women in the science sectors, but they are still under-represented in these fields. That is why it is important to break down barriers so that more women can enter the science workforce with a toolkit of skills and experience.

Have you or someone you know ever thought about a career in science? We’ve rounded up four Government of Canada programs and initiatives where you can find STEM opportunities you won’t want to miss out on:

  1. Student Work Placement Program: Are you registered in a post-secondary program? You could find real-world, hands-on work experience in several sectors, including STEM. Check out potential student work placements.
  2. Digital Skills for Youth program: Are you a post-secondary graduate? The Digital Skills for Youth program can connect you with small businesses and not-for-profit organizations where you can gain meaningful work experience to help you transition to career-oriented employment. Learn more about these organizations and their internship opportunities.
  3. Science Horizons Youth Internship Program: Are you a recent post-secondary graduate? The Science Horizons Youth Internship Program supports jobs for youth by offering internship opportunities to work in the STEM sectors.
  4. Science and Technology Internship Program – Green Jobs: Kick-start careers in the energy, forestry, mining, earth sciences and clean technology sectors. With the Science and Technology Internship Program—Green Jobs, organizations can create quality and inclusive work experiences for youth in STEM and related fields.
