Four Quick Tips on How to be An Effective Leader
I'm just back from leading a marketing workshop in Montpellier, France for the International Wine Club Association.
What a terrific group of people -- they're smart, friendly, and great at leading their organizations.
Which brings me to the topic of today's e-newsletter: How to become a more effective leader.
Research shows that if you work on the following skills, you'll become a better leader over time.
Tip #1: Increase your self-awareness
Effective leaders are aware of their own strengths and weaknesses. And they embrace both, stepping up when they’re confident, and asking for help when that assignment is outside of their skillset.
Tip #2: Learn to manage yourself
Self-management is the ability to control your emotions and act with honesty and integrity. Effective leaders manage their emotions and don’t allow the occasional bad mood impact those around them.

Tip #3: Develop social awareness
Effective leaders do more than sense other people’s emotions. Instead, they show that they care. They understand how their words and actions make others feel and are sensitive enough to change them when that impact is negative.
Tip #4: Improve your communication skills
Top leaders can communicate clearly and convincingly. They use these skills to spread their enthusiasm and solve disagreements, often with humor and kindness.
Are you a good leader? I've created a video with a short quiz so that you can test whether or not you're a good leader. Check it out below.

2yI didn't really like either answer for the first question. The second answer seemed to put the new employee on the spot but the first answer would lead to 'group think'.

2yJamie, Hope you and Dana are doing well. I would like to add another factor to your discussion on leadership skills. It is two parts actually. Good leaders know how to EMPOWER the people they lead to accomplish the task at hand then effectively establish the ACCOUNTABILITY in their people or teams for getting it done. Just extra food for thought. All the best, Nick

2yJamie - I have recently been consumed with the idea of what makes a leader truly effective... I have found that all leaders are initially promoted beyond their level of experience and skills, and often stuggle to learn the process for building and sustaining a more positive and profitable culture - and I agree that improved AWARENESS is a key factor in their increased effectiveness. Curious to know your thoughts on the ways that people can improve their awareness?
