Four Ways to Maximize Your Impact with Holiday Donations
Welcome to another edition of Wealth Whispers! The holiday season is (almost) here, and along with it, a flurry of cheerful cards and an endless stack of donation requests from charities around the world.
The global World Giving Index hit 40 points in 2023, its highest since 2021. Impressively, 73% of adults gave their time, money, or lent a helping hand to a stranger last year. Yet, if you’re like me, deciding where to give can feel overwhelming. How can you ensure your contribution makes the greatest impact?
Here are four impactful ideas to guide your giving this holiday season:
1. Combine Heart and Strategy in Your Giving
Giving is as much about emotion as it is about impact. Start by asking yourself:
What are the most pressing issues in the world today? Where can my contribution create the greatest change?
If you’re unsure, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a roadmap of global priorities, from ending hunger to combating climate change. Use these as a guide to focus your efforts. Alternatively, consider giving locally by supporting charities and initiatives within your immediate community. Remember, every donation counts—whether big or small—the key is to align your giving with your values.
2. Make It a Family Affair
Involve your family in the decision-making process. This not only helps you choose a cause everyone cares about but also fosters discussions about generosity and global challenges.
Ask your loved ones:
What issues are we passionate about?
What challenges have we experienced personally or feel strongly about
If we had a million dollars to donate, where would we give it?
In our household, this conversation has become a cherished tradition. My children, deeply concerned about the environment, were thrilled to support ocean cleanup efforts last year. Including kids in these decisions helps instill values of empathy and responsibility from an early age.

3. Explore Alternatives Beyond Cash Donations
There are many ways to contribute to meaningful change:
Support social entrepreneurs: Platforms like Kickstarter or GiveDirectly enable you to back specific projects or individuals creating real-world impact.
Donate time and expertise: Many local charities desperately need skills, networks, or volunteers more than money.
Reassess your investments: Align your portfolio with your values by incorporating sustainable or socially responsible investments. Examples include Tribe Impact Capital and The Big Exchange, which focus on combining financial returns with positive impact.
Sometimes, your time or expertise can be more valuable than any monetary donation.
4. Ensure Your Donation Makes a Difference
If you decide to donate financially, take a moment to do some research:
Check financial transparency: Use platforms like Charity Navigator or Charity Watch to see how much of your money goes toward the cause versus administrative costs.
Investigate impact tracking: Does the charity share measurable results?
Verify tax deductibility: Ensure the charity is properly registered and can provide the necessary tax documentation.
Finally, look at who runs the organization. A transparent, well-run charity will have a reputable board and leadership team.
Ultimately:
It’s not about how much you give—it’s about the heart you put into it. Even a simple smile can create a ripple of kindness. Let’s make it count.

3wLove this Olga Miler „It’s not about how much you give—it’s about the heart you put into it. Even a simple smile can create a ripple of kindness. Let’s make it count.“ 👏❤️ As a family we donate often to very different causes, depending on what inspired us or if something happened that increased our sensitivity towards a specific need/ issue. Giving is not just for Christmas but it’s good to be reminded at this time especially that we’re all connected and we should help each other. If we’re fortunate to be able to give something extra, no matter how small, each act of generosity can have a positive impact- and what goes around comes around in unexpected ways. 🎄❤️
