Freedom From Sugar Cravings

We all know how frustrating it can be when Sugar cravings shift us away from our desired health goals. Remember, it's not just you, sugar cravings are frequent and common and it's perfectly fine to get them sometimes, but understanding when they might be going off limits is key to staying on track with our health goals.

Your sweet tooth might have a secret accomplice hiding in your gut. They are none other than your gut microbes. These tiny residents play a significant role in shaping your cravings for sugary treats. According to studies, some types of harmful bacteria in the gut can create chemicals that activate the brain's reward centers and increase desire for foods high in sugar and calories. These cravings can be quite strong and challenging to control, which can result in a vicious cycle of overindulging in sugar and processed foods and further promote the development of harmful bacteria in the gut.

Secret behind Cravings

Different foods are preferred by different bacteria. For example, some bacteria like sugar over fat. Some organisms require other macronutrients in order to develop. For growth and reproduction, all bacteria need a constant supply of the particular substances they need.

Additionally, they have a unique way of asking for the food they want. The bacteria may start to harm the host as a result of a survival strategy when there is a low concentration of the nutrients they need to survive.

At times, the gut microorganisms secrete proteins that act as hormones that control appetite and crave the nutrients that the bacteria in the gut feed on. When we refuse to give them what they want, they may trouble us and we find ourselves searching for “something sweet” after a meal. Therefore, consuming a lot of sugar feeds the bacteria that crave sugar and stimulates the appetite for more sweets so they can continue to thrive. It is a destructive cycle. Thus it may be challenging to change our dietary patterns because the microbiota causes appetites for foods they desire which makes it all the more important to balance our diet in order to nourish healthy microbes that crave healthy foods.
