Friday Thoughts: What’s Interesting This Week?

October 18, 2024

Well, well, well, what do we have this week? A shiny new NIS 2 guidance, promises of 25% fewer reporting headaches (as if), and AI systems that can now apparently detect your mood. So, what’s caught my eye?

NIS 2: Cybersecurity or Just Risky Business?

The NIS 2 Directive has finally graced us with its presence, promising to usher in a new era of cybersecurity resilience. Or, in plain terms: more boxes to tick and more sleepless nights for anyone responsible for managing “cyber risks.” Sure, it’s all about enhancing security, but if you read between the lines, it feels more like preparing for a never-ending round of cyber Whac-A-Mole.

Risk management, they say, will now be smarter and aligned with the best global standards. But here’s a question: will we have enough time to actually manage risks between the mandatory incident reports, supply chain checks, and training sessions for staff who will, let’s face it, still click on that phishing link?

Automated Reporting: 25% Fewer Forms, 25% More Confusion?

Ah yes, the EU’s glorious plan to reduce reporting burdens by 25%. It sounds great in theory—less paperwork, more time for… actual work? But hold on. The catch? We’ll be spending that “saved” time getting familiar with new automated systems that are supposedly going to simplify everything.

Because we all know how intuitive those systems will be. I can already see the new job titles popping up: “Digital Reporting Whisperer” or “Automated Compliance Therapist.” By the time we’ve figured out how to input, format, and troubleshoot these shiny new processes, that 25% burden reduction will feel more like a 25% increase in sleepless nights.

AI and Emotion Detection: Your Robot Knows You’re Upset—Before You Do

And then there’s the future of emotion-detecting AI. Imagine calling customer service and the AI knows you’re “mildly frustrated” before you’ve even spoken. Or worse—law enforcement using AI to predict whether you’re about to cause trouble based on your facial expressions. Forget human error, now we’ve got algorithmic empathy.

The future of AI could mean machines understanding our emotions better than we do. So, what’s next? Are we going to need a robot therapist to explain to us why we’re having a bad day? I’m just waiting for the day when my coffee machine senses my stress level and suggests decaf. If that’s not dystopia, I don’t know what is.

What’s interesting this week? Cybersecurity, reduced paperwork (or not), and robots that may soon care about your feelings. It’s a brave new world out there, folks. Buckle up.
