From Change Manager to Dopa-Manager: How Dopamine Reimagines Leading Change

From Change Manager to Dopa-Manager: How Dopamine Reimagines Leading Change

Let's get straight to the point. The world of work is changing faster than you can say "burnout," and the buzzwords are flying left and right—Grit! Growth Mindset! Unlearning! But what's the connective tissue that makes these abstract concepts stick? Enter the marvelous world of dopamine! 🎉

Dopamine: The Unsung Hero of the Corporate Saga 🦸♂️

Dopamine isn't just the chemical behind your "Netflix and Chill" urges; it's an essential neurotransmitter that plays a pivotal role in keeping us motivated, focused, and ready for action. And guess what, Managers and HR wizards, it’s time to add a new title to your LinkedIn— Dopa-Manager! 😎

🎯The Dopamine Effect on Adapt-abilities

Before we delve into the magical world of dopamine, let's look at three adapt-abilities. (FYI, there are five ability dimensions that strongly impact our ability to adapt. For more information, click here.)

  • Grit: The relentless pursuit of goals.
  • Growth Mindset: The belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed.
  • Unlearning: The ability to let go of outdated knowledge and make room for new ideas.

1️⃣ Grit: The Staying Power 💪

You know those days when the Wi-Fi crashes, clients are demanding, and coffee is nowhere to be found? Those are the days when grit comes into play. Grit isn't just innate stubbornness; it’s dopamine-fueled perseverance.

When we accomplish a task, no matter how small, our brain releases dopamine, rewarding us with a sense of pleasure. It's our internal "Well done, mate!" message that keeps us coming back for more.

Managers, sprinkle those micro-goals like confetti at a New Year's Eve party and watch your team's dopamine levels—and grit—skyrocket! 🎆

2️⃣ Growth Mindset: The Learning Gear 🧠

Remember the first time you assembled IKEA furniture without screaming? That's a growth mindset in action!

Your team needs to believe that they can achieve. Dopamine plays a role here too. It's like a neurological pat on the back, saying, "Hey, you can do it." By creating a dopamine-friendly environment filled with opportunities for achievement, we inspire our teams to push beyond their limits. Think of it as emotional rocket fuel for their learning journey to the moon! 🚀

3️⃣ Unlearning: The Brain’s Spring Cleaning 🍃

Unlearning isn’t about hitting the delete button; it's more like reformatting the hard drive to install new software. And guess who’s the MVP in making this process smooth? Our trusty friend dopamine! Successfully ditching outdated ideas for new, more effective ones gives us that dopamine high, making the brain more adaptive and open to change. It's like taking off winter tires when spring arrives—you're making room for something better. 🌸

The Big Takeaway 🌟

Managers, if you're pushing for change with the subtlety of a bull in a china shop, you're doing it wrong. True adaptability needs the magic touch of dopamine. Turn your team into a dopamine-fueled powerhouse that’s more adaptable than a Swiss Army knife at a survivalist convention!

So there you have it—a scientific spin on how to take your management game to the next level. It's not just about big words and bigger speeches. Sometimes, it's as simple as understanding the tiny chemicals buzzing in our brains.

Don't just be a change manager; be a Dopa-Manager! Let's rewrite the rulebook, one neurotransmitter at a time! 📚

I’ve found that my first few dopamine hits of the day really sets my brain’s focus for the rest of my working hours. If I wake up and look at the phone right away to see social media updates, I find myself struggling to stay away from my phone the rest of the day. But when I get up, get ready, and do any small thing related to work.. I am more keen to chase work-related dopamine hits the rest of the day. Example: I check my email before driving into work, and action at least 1 email or flag a few I need to return to. Or I practice a presentation. Or I check my calendar for any conflicts and suggest alternate meeting times. In all of these examples I’m doing one small productive action which gets me craving more productivity throughout the day.
