Nurturing the future generation

As a parent residing in Singapore, I recognise the profound responsibility of providing my children with a comprehensive education that enhances their lives in diverse dimensions. My objective is to cultivate their proficiency in multiple languages, including English, Chinese, and Japanese, while simultaneously introducing them to the rich cultural landscapes of both Singapore and Japan.

I am fortunate to have started my multifaceted professional life, balancing my roles as a management and IT consultant in the software and banking sectors before I gained sufficient experience, passion and capital for entrepreneurship. Additionally, I serve as a part-time lecturer at the university, instructing core modules in the undergraduate entrepreneurship program and co-facilitating two postgraduate modules in Chinese and English. My role as an adult educator specialising in e-digital transformation and e-commerce also provides me significant fulfillment.

It is essential to recognise that future employment opportunities may not yet exist. As parents, we must contemplate how to equip our children with transferable skills to prepare them for an evolving job market. Embracing change is critical, and I believe lifelong learning is vital for individual and collective development. I am lucky to have undergone a diverse educational experience that has significantly shaped my worldview. However, it was by chance, by fate and by the non-conformist streak in me rather than forced upon me by my parents (who have been brilliant in letting me choose my journey).

My preferred subjects during the O Levels included the humanities, such as literature and history, in addition to arts, elementary mathematics, and the combined sciences of physics and chemistry, allowing me to have a foundation in arts, literature and creativity. Subsequently, I pursued a double science stream focused on physics and chemistry, alongside Economics and college mathematics, as a science major in junior college, topping the college in Economics. This trajectory ultimately directed me toward finance during my university studies. Each of these experiences has empowered me and enriched my consulting career, inspiring the development of essential skills in information technology, business analytics, and digitalisation within my role as a solution architect.

Early specialisation may not best serve our children in the long term. In contemporary contexts, design—particularly design thinking—represents a constructive integration of art and science. Regrettably, many professionals in the fields of technology, industry, mathematics, and science often encounter challenges in aligning design principles with the core values of their work. Furthermore, in the retail sector, we are reshaping our lifestyles and exploring avenues to thrive amidst the complexities of the modern world. This collective journey fosters a sense of hope as we navigate these challenges to benefit our children's futures.
