From Developer to Decision-Maker: My Leadership Evolution at Whirlpool
This summer, I had the enriching experience of interning at Whirlpool as a Global IT Leadership Intern, while pursuing my dual degree MBA & MIS at Eller College of Management. I was entrusted with the ambitious project of developing the trade self-service site, aiming to enhance our trade partners' experience. The vision was a multi-phase rollout, each offering more benefits, and an improved notification system for better automation.
One of my pivotal contributions was introducing a rewards system where trade partners earned points for appointments. These points could be redeemed for appealing merchandise or, in a unique twist that I passionately advocated for, donated to charity. This idea, blending business with social responsibility, required meticulous budgeting, collaboration with the legal team for clear reward rules, and working with the merchandise team to select enticing gifts.
Transitioning from a software developer to a product manager was a learning curve. It taught me the essence of leadership: empowering and trusting your team. I also took the initiative to preemptively address potential customer queries, creating tutorial videos to enhance user experience. These efforts are projected to result in a 30% reduction in customer wait times and a yearly cost-saving of $600k.
Networking was a significant part of my journey. Pushed to meet new faces daily, I confronted my insecurities, forging strong connections, especially with leadership figures. This not only expanded my professional horizon but also boosted my confidence.
