From High School to TEDx: everything I learned about public speaking came from one teacher.

I was recentely honored with the opportunity to give a TEDx Talk on The Power of Storytelling with Images-which really about visual literacy for humans. I've been quite fortunate to have been invited to give talks many times over the years. This has taken me from conventions and conferences, to bookstores, classrooms and universities in almost every state of the union as well as overseas. At every single event there is a moment, just before I step out onto the stage, where I can see the entire student body of my high school sitting in the bleachers, watching me as I quickly scan the agenda for the first pep rally of my senior year. No pressure...

I wound up as the emcee for our pep rallies that year in part because I was the student body vice president but also in larger part because my public speaking teacher (who was also my baseball coach) told me that I would be taking his speaking class the previous semester. Bill Tamburrino aka Tambo simply stated "You're going to take my class this semester".

It was an amazing class. He encouraged us to speak on any subject: planned or impromtu...we got heckled by our classmates, we got critiqued in real time. If they taught stand up comedy in high school, it would be just like this. In short public speaking was a full contact sport in Tambo's class.

So on that very first pep rally, I was paged by our advisor Jean McDonald to come down to the floor. Of course all the guys around me went 'ooooooh! Shableski is already busted!' and they laughed.

When I got to Mrs. McDonald she handed me a piece of paper and said "Good morning John, did anyone tell you that you are the emcee for the rally?" I replied "umm no. What's an M.C.?" She smiled and replied "You are the Master of Ceremonies and you take this agenda over to the microphone where you announce each thing as it comes up."

I looked at Mrs. McDonald then over to the bleachers where every single person I had known growing up, was watching. I looked back at her and said something like "Well, alright. Let's see how this goes".

As I got through the first two lines of the script, 8 of my closest friends, seated in the front row, center of the bleachers yelled out in unison "SHABLESKI your hands are shaking!" Which they were, so I quickly scanned the sheet of paper to memorize what I could and chucked it. I have a natural tremor and realized if people see that, it would distract them from what I was talking about.

From that moment on, I've always been grateful to Tambo insisting that I take his public speaking class and to Jean McDonald who was so matter of fact about my role for those peprallies. Because of that, I've been able to find that comfortable spot on stage, with the microphone in front of any audience, any where.

When it came to the TEDx Talk I gave earlier this spring, I had to warn the production crew that I would not use a script nor would I be able to stand in a single spot to speak. That second part might be due to learning how to dodge items as my friends were throwing them at me in my high school public speaking class.
