These aren’t real people. They’re AI bots managed by Meta, introduced to integrate generative AI into social media platforms.

Sounds innovative, right? Not quite. The reception has been overwhelmingly negative, with users questioning the need for such bots and raising ethical concerns. Let’s explore what happened, why it backfired, and the broader implications for AI in social spaces.


A Promising Start: Celebrity AI Bots

In 2023, Meta rolled out its first wave of AI chatbots featuring celebrities like Kendall Jenner and MrBeast. These bots, designed to interact with users on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, initially garnered attention.

However, within a year, the celebrity bots were shelved due to lackluster reception. Despite this, Meta didn’t stop there. A second wave of AI profiles emerged, featuring fictional personas like:

  • Jane Austen: A storyteller offering witty insights.
  • Liv: A proud Black queer mom advocating for truth.
  • Carter: A self-proclaimed relationship expert.

These profiles, though labeled as “AI managed by Meta,” have struggled to gain traction, with minimal followers and engagement.


User Backlash: Confusion and Frustration

The recent discovery of these AI profiles has sparked outrage across social media. Users expressed confusion about the purpose of these bots and questioned their authenticity:

  • Dating Advice from AI? One user commented, “What the [heck] does an AI know about dating?”
  • Cultural Appropriation Claims: Liv’s profile faced criticism for what some called “virtual blackface.”

Adding to the frustration, users couldn’t block or restrict these profiles due to a technical glitch, further fueling the backlash.


Meta’s Vision: A Bot-Driven Social Future

Meta envisions a future where AI bots coexist with human accounts on social media. According to Connor Hayes, VP of product for generative AI at Meta:

“AI bots will have bios, profile pictures, and generate content, becoming an integral part of the platform.”

While the concept aligns with Meta’s broader push into generative AI, many users and experts find the idea unsettling. The intentional addition of bots to social platforms raises critical questions:

  3. Cultural Sensitivity Avoid superficial representations of marginalized groups without genuine inclusion.
