From Niche to Necessity: How AI is Redefining Business Leadership and Strategy

The astonishing pace of technology—particularly the rise of artificial intelligence (AI)—is something I often reflect on. It wasn’t too long ago that AI was a mystery wrapped in algorithms, dominated by scientists and tech giants, hidden behind closed doors. Today, however, AI is something we can all access with a simple internet connection. Personally, I find myself using it in many different areas, from trying to code something I might need to experimenting with models for specific interests. Things that were once far beyond my core educational learnings are now suddenly accessible. This is just the beginning, and as I often tell those I teach, this is the worst it will ever be. The shift from niche to necessity represents one of the most profound changes in our digital age, reshaping everything from business strategy to personal life.

In the early days, AI was an exclusive club. Working with AI required not only top-notch technical skills but also a substantial financial investment. Applications like IBM's Deep Blue playing chess or the advanced data analysis done at research institutions demanded a level of sophistication that was simply out of reach for most people. The organizations that could afford these systems were primarily focused on demonstrating what AI could achieve in controlled, isolated environments. It was a time of great promise, but access was limited to a select few.

The AI landscape began to change when key breakthroughs made the technology accessible beyond the confines of elite institutions. Although building foundational models is still costly, advancements have empowered everyday people to achieve remarkable things. Today, AI is more accessible than ever, allowing individuals and small teams to harness powerful tools that were once the domain of large corporations. This shift began with advancements across multiple domains, including natural language processing, user-friendly interfaces, AI-as-a-service models, and mobile integration.

The launch of models like OpenAI's GPT-3 in 2020 changed the game. With its human-like text capabilities, GPT-3 made AI something anyone could interact with, paving the way for applications far beyond the tech elite. Now, AI could process language in ways that made interactions smoother and more intuitive, even for non-experts. When I first played with it I thought - Magic! Even though my logical mind knew better. 

Voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant were early game-changers, but it's the newer voice capabilities powered by generative AI that have truly redefined the experience. These systems can now convey emotion, adapt more naturally to context, and provide a much deeper level of interaction. AI has evolved from being simple software to a personalized assistant that understands nuance and responds in a human-like way, transforming it into an indispensable presence.

Platforms like Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud initially opened up AI capabilities on a subscription basis, making it possible for startups and small businesses to leverage complex AI tools. However, the real shift has come from newer systems that make these capabilities accessible to anyone. Today, anyone can access powerful AI tools for as little as $20 a month—or even for free with some know-how. This has redefined democratization, putting unprecedented power in the hands of individuals and small teams, enabling them to innovate without the need for large infrastructure investments.

As AI becomes more mainstream, its role within organizations is evolving. It is no longer a nice-to-have; AI is now integral to competitive advantage, driving new efficiencies and enabling a level of foresight that was previously unimaginable. However, leveraging AI is not just about adopting new technology; it requires organizations to align AI with their core mission and values.

For leaders, embracing AI that means fostering a culture of digital transformation, preparing their teams to use these tools effectively, and establishing ethical guidelines for responsible use. AI should not only align with business goals and be a core part of a business strategy but also reflect the organization’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

There’s a stark contrast between organizations that adopt AI strategically and those that lag behind. The leaders in AI integration are more agile and responsive; they predict market trends, optimize operations, and deliver personalized customer experiences that set them apart. These organizations see reduced costs, improved decision-making, and new revenue streams. They often attract top talent and gain the public’s trust as innovators. In contrast, organizations that avoid AI face a growing disadvantage. Without data-driven insights, they become slower to act, struggle with customer responsiveness, and risk losing relevance. This reluctance or inability to adapt to AI can lead to significant market losses, both in efficiency and customer trust. Even those that make the change may find themselves facing challenges due to an increasingly competitive landscape, but it is far better to be in the arena, adapting and evolving, than to be left behind.

The journey of AI from an exclusive, complex technology to an everyday tool represents more than a technological milestone; it is fundamentally reshaping the way businesses operate and compete. The democratization of AI has empowered millions, putting the tools for innovation and problem-solving in the hands of individuals and small teams, leveling the playing field. In the business context, this shift is not just about adopting new technologies—it's about embedding AI into core strategies to drive growth, improve operational efficiency, and gain market insights that were previously unattainable. Companies that embrace AI as a foundational element of their business model are setting themselves up to lead in this new era.

However, success with AI is not guaranteed simply by adopting the latest tools. Leaders must prioritize accessibility and education within their organizations, ensuring their teams are prepared to leverage AI ethically and effectively. This is about building a culture where AI is used responsibly to generate real business value while maintaining transparency and accountability. The true potential of AI lies not in the technology itself, but in how we choose to apply it to solve real business challenges, create new opportunities, and drive societal progress.

As we look ahead, the question is not simply, 'What can AI do?' but rather, 'How can we strategically use AI to build a more resilient, innovative, and inclusive business environment?' The answers we find will shape the competitive landscape, determining which businesses will lead and which will fall behind. In this rapidly evolving world, those who take proactive steps today—integrating AI thoughtfully into their operations—will be the ones to define the future of their industries, set new standards for innovation, and capture market opportunities that others may miss.

I totally agree with artificial intelligence necessity for the future, but at the same time it will cause some damages for employees who will not be able to keep up. For the reason I do believe there should be artificial intelligence tax that will be channeled toward reeducating and rehabbing that affected citizens
