From Our Partner Schools: What Students Should Know About Studying Abroad

By India Today Information Desk: Many students are currently planning, writing, and finalizing their applications to universities and colleges. Although it is a thrilling time, the process of completing student applications and gathering all the required paperwork can be tiring. Many international students studied across the globe in 2021 and 2022. In the October 2022 edition of Apply Board's Pulse Survey, 83% of recruitment counsellors surveyed indicated they had seen an increase in the number of students interested in studying abroad over the previous three months.

Studying abroad opens global opportunities and provides students with a unique experience that can help them excel in this highly competitive world. As students prepare their student applications, I wanted to take some time to share some tips to keep in mind.

As a former international student myself, I'm passionate about enabling access to education and helping students achieve their potential. A crucial step in the study application process is research. Make a note of all the pertinent information prior to starting the application process, including the course you want to pursue, the study abroad destination, the cost of tuition and living expenses.

Not spending enough time triple-checking applications and supporting documents is a typical error students make when applying to study abroad. It is crucial to pay attention to detail and take the necessary time to ensure that you submit accurate documents and information. Plan ahead and get your documents ready in advance. TIPS FROM US-BASED INSTITUTIONS:

Here I have added tips from some of the institutions based in the United States. They elaborate on the importance of planning, time management, and research.

IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

“I'd like to remind students to pay attention to deadlines. Every institution has their own deadlines when it comes to admissions and scholarships. At Iowa State, we even have a priority scholarship deadline which can give students a higher chance for scholarship. So deadlines are very important.” says Kimy Moothart, Assistant Director, International Admissions.

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, CHICO

“Each program and university are unique. For some, standardised tests will be considered more heavily. For others, your statement of purpose or work experience might be more important.

  • Consider the requirements carefully and make sure your application clearly shows that you meet those requirements. If work experience is required, make sure you demonstrate that your experience is meaningful and relevant.
  • If letters of recommendation are required, make sure your recommenders know you well and provide individualised letters that demonstrate their familiarity with you as a student or employee.” says Dr. Jennifer L. Gruber, Associate Vice President, International Education & Global Engagement.

UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

“There are many important factors to consider when applying to the U.S. Academic quality, student support, and fees are the first things that come to mind. You’ll also need to review entry requirements and ensure you are applying on time. Be sure to take a deeper dive and research program highlights such as internships or research projects as well,” says Katie Van Wyk, Director, International Admissions and Enrolments.

“Find out how your institution will give you an edge when you graduate and enter the workforce. Of course, campus facilities and student life are very important to ensuring a great experience in and out of the classroom. Follow social media for your institution to hear student stories and to get application tips. Don’t be shy about reaching out to your preferred institution to ask questions and make contacts,” continues Katie Van Wyk.

As a reminder, the tips are merely a starting point. The tips are not inclusive of all the steps that the applicant should incorporate in their applications. Every student application is unique and has different requirements. Whether students choose to pursue their academic dreams in the US or elsewhere, these tips should offer more background on what to keep in mind.
