From temp to Production Supervisor

From temp to Production Supervisor

Before I get into my West story, I would like to share a bit about who I am and my background.

I am originally from a small Island called American Samoa, located in the South Pacific Ocean. It’s a U.S territory with a population of 55,197. My mom has Rheumatoid arthritis and was in a wheelchair for almost two years. Being the eldest daughter, I wanted to take care of her. In 2010, I flew with her to Arizona so she could have life changing knee surgeries. After the surgery she was moved to a nursing home for about six months to receive physical therapy and learn how to walk again.

I decided to apply for a temporary job. I had thought I’d quit the job and move back home with my mom when she was able to go. Working at West wasn't supposed to be permanent; it was not part of the plan.

In August 2013, I joined West on a temporary contract for nine months as an Assembly Operator in Phoenix. And I’m happy to say I’m still here, ten years later, but very much in a permanent role.

When I joined, I learned the job and got the chance to know a lot of people. I just love the diversity we have at West. I get to work with people from different places all around the world. I’ve been able to learn about their different cultures and a little bit of their languages too.

In 2014, I was trained as a Backup Lead in the Assembly Area. I got to learn more about the parts that we are making for a customer device, how cool is that?! One of the many reasons I love West is that I get to make parts for a life saving device. We really do make a difference.

Since joining, I’ve had lots of opportunities to develop and received lots of training and support. In 2015, I became a Production Lead, a role which helped me to grow my leadership and people skills. I did leave the company in 2018 for about two months due to personal and emotional reasons. Sometimes we need to take care of our mental health.

When all was right in the world again, I asked to return and was welcomed back, which I’m always grateful for. Human Resources were really understanding. It just shows how much West values good and hardworking people. In August 2020, I was promoted to Production Supervisor. Starting as an Operator and working my way up definitely helped me become better at my job. I’m still learning today.

Here at West Phoenix, we are not just coworkers, we are a family. Here's to many more years with West, truly blessed with the best!
