FT Partners Research is pleased to announce the publication of our Q3 2023 Sponsor FinTech Insights report, providing the most comprehensive quarterly review of global Private Equity FinTech deal activity across sponsor-led M&A and minority transactions.
Please read on for a brief summary of the quarterly report:
- Private equity deal count declined from Q2 and remains low compared to 2021 and 2022 levels as the dealmaking environment continues to be relatively quietSponsors completed 37 FinTech transactions in Q3 2023, representing a 23% decrease YoY and a 29% decrease QoQ
- Despite declining deal count, Q3 2023 announced transaction volume of $27 billion was the highest since 2021, and up significantly YoY from $14 billion in Q3 2022, largely attributable to GTCR's $18.5 billion acquisition of Worldpay ("WP") Excluding GTCR's Worldpay acquisition, transaction volume is down 37% YoY, more closely resembling the deal count trends for the quarter
- For the trailing 12-month period, sponsor-led deal activity totaled $51 billion across 158 transactions, including $15 billion in take-private volume, $32 billion of other M&A transactions and $4 billion in minority financing transactionsThe number of LTM sponsor-led deals was down 35% compared to the prior 12-month period
- Take-private transactions have stalled out recently, with P2P deal volume for LTM Q3 2023 down 59% from the same period last year, although Thoma Bravo did complete the $1.8 billion acquisition of NextGen Healthcare
- Despite current headwinds facing the private equity industry and a challenging fundraising environment, several firms have successfully raised large funds in Q3 2023, including: CVC Capital raised $28.6 billion for its ninth Europe/Americas buyout fund Clayton, Dubilier, & Rice raised $26 billion for its seventh flagship private equity fund
