Fujitsu Research News Update - March 2024
Exploring Technology Horizons at the Fujitsu ActivateNow Technology Summit
In March, Fujitsu Research hosted this year's Fujitsu ActivateNow Technology Summit at the Fujitsu Research of America facility, nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley (#fants2024). Under the theme of “AI-Driven Transformation: Morphing Challenges to Opportunities,” the technology summit focused on the dynamic role of advanced technologies in AI and Computing, exploring the profound impact AI has in transforming challenges into opportunities for customers.
Global Chief Technology Officer Vivek Mahajan presented Fujitsu's technology strategy, with a deep dive into the Fujitsu Kozuchi cloud-based AI platform that allow rapid development, testing, and implementation across seven AI areas, including unique technologies for the fairness and explainabilty of AI.
Compelling keynotes were delivered by the distinguished Prof Stephen Smith, Research Professor of Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, and Prof George Smoot, Nobel laureate in Physics and Professor Emeritus at the Department of Physics, University of California, Berkeley .
All of this was complemented by thought-provoking panel discussions between industry leaders, and Fujitsu's showcase across 12 different technologies including Generative AI, quantum computing, Social Digital Twin, and optimization. Fujitsu's research teams demonstrated how we are working in pursuit of a more sustainable future.
Focus on Quantum - More from the First Fujitsu Quantum Day
Our recent Fujitsu Quantum Day in Delft included the unveiling of the winners of the Fujitsu Quantum Simulator Challenge competition - as the culmination of the 7-month $100,000 global competition to test Fujitsu’s 39-cubit quantum simulator on novel problems and applications. The Finnish team from Quanscient Oy took the first prize for its project “quantum algorithms for fluid dynamics".
Spotlight on AI Ethics
European milestone as MEPs approve world's first comprehensive AI law
Establishing the world’s first comprehensive framework for constraining the risks of AI has moved one step closer, as the European Parliament formally approves the Artificial Intelligence Act, designed to ensure safety and compliance with fundamental rights, while boosting innovation. It’s an important step on our journey to making AI safer and ensuring that technology developments are truly human-centric, underpinning the introduction of AI technologies into innovations and business.
As one of the founding members of AI4People and of the High Level Group on AI created by the European Commission in 2018, Fujitsu has been a consistent and pioneering advocate of new guidelines and regulations in the field of AI ethics – contributing extensively to the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI, which served as the basis of the AI Act. In 2020, Fujitsu examined how trustworthy AI can be implemented in Automotive, Banking & Finance and reported the findings in the AI4People’s 7 AI Global Frameworks report presented to the European Parliament. Currently, Fujitsu is the Co-Chair of the Scientific Committee of AI4People and is contributing to the forthcoming Whitepaper “Towards an Ethics by Design Approach for AI”.
The AI Act’s risk-based approach aligns with Fujitsu’s commitment to responsible, human-centric AI, and with Fujitsu’s AI Trust solutions, which have been recently accepted in the OECD.AI Policy Observatory Catalogue of Tools & Metrics for Trustworthy AI.
