FUNDING POTENTIAL – PART 6 – COMMUNITY
Everyone has heard of ‘word-of-mouth’ marketing. What people often forget to ask is, “Who’s mouth?” When raising capital, it is common for the small business to pitch its offer to people unknown to the leadership of the small business. The capital campaign plan should focus communications on getting the pitch from the people they know to the people they don’t know. However, everyone known to the leadership of the small business may be unwilling or unable to be part of a word-of-mouth communication channel. The people who will step up and fill this role are people within the small business' community.
Through this Instant Funding newsletter, I am working to build my community. I am on my own learning curve in understanding what a community is and how to build one.
The number of relationships within a community is less important than the quality of the relationships. Achieving the highest quality requires a strategy that gives something of value to each member of the community.
I have learned so far, like pitching investor candidates, that I need more time and money to identify, qualify, invite, and engage everyone who may be members of my community. Maintaining a quality relationship represents a ‘pay it forward’ investment of time. A strategy will include actions that help everyone within your community, actions that benefit selected groups within your community, and specific individuals from time to time. It is necessary to balance the time invested in engagement with a community.
To place all of this within the context of raising capital, having a large, strong community already in place before launching a capital campaign is almost always necessary. Without a community, a small business may not have any immediate investors and an inability to share its story with anyone, which may result in attaining the goals of the capital campaign.
As I am learning while building my community, I invite readers of this newsletter to share their stories, names of experts, and sources of information on building communities. Please send me a message on LinkedIn or an email at kdakin@dakincapital.com.
SUCCESSFUL FUNDING
Earlier today, my guest on my Successful Funding show was Wayne McDaniel with the SaT Catalyst Fund, a donor-advised fund that invests in impact businesses. Donor-advised funds represent a source of funding that matches individuals benefiting charities with their donations while obtaining tax deductions that meet the needs of businesses for investment.
