The Future of AI: A Call for Responsibility in Innovation
"I'm worried about us as a species. AI (it’s) a much bigger problem."
We are at a pivotal juncture. Powerful technologies have profoundly altered how we live, work, and interact. They are shaping not only our present but also the future of our society. Among these, Generative AI (GenAI) stands as a transformative yet deeply disruptive force, forcing us to confront fundamental questions about the role of technology in human life.
The Evolution of Language and the Influence of GenAI
Language is a core human trait—rich with cultural, philosophical, and semantic layers—developed over millennia to help us understand each other, our past, and our aspirations. It has been the foundation of human progress, providing structure and meaning. However, GenAI’s exponential mastery of human language, while undoubtedly useful, is shifting the dynamics.
For the first time, we must ask: Are humans influencing technology, or is technology influencing us? GenAI can now generate human-like text, imagery, and even voice with astonishing accuracy. While this unlocks vast potential, it simultaneously erodes genuine human trust in the content we consume and create.
The Challenge of Trust in the Era of GenAI
As GenAI continues to mimic human authorship, a crisis of trust emerges:
The fundamental question is no longer just about what technology can do but rather how we choose to use it. Without clear frameworks, we risk letting GenAI run amok, addressing its consequences only through "after-the-fact" containment measures.

Proposing Human-Assisting Intelligence (HAI): A Human-Centred Approach
To navigate these challenges, I propose a paradigm shift: Human-Assisting Intelligence (HAI).
What is HAI? HAI anchors AI systems to human values, ethics, and knowledge, ensuring that technology remains a tool to serve humanity, not supplant it. This methodology integrates insights from the humanities and sciences to ground AI in ethical principles and cultural context. It addresses key dimensions:
Why HAI Matters The unregulated deployment of GenAI risks steering our trajectory in unpredictable and undesirable ways. Instead of developing reactive measures to mitigate harm, we need proactive, interdisciplinary frameworks that embed ethical considerations from the outset. HAI ensures:
A Call to Action
The question is no longer whether AI will shape our future—it already is. The real challenge is deciding how it will do so. GenAI, as powerful and useful as it is, must be wielded responsibly. Without anchoring it to human values, we risk undermining the very fabric of trust, creativity, and progress that defines us as a species.
We must act decisively to integrate Human-Assisting Intelligence into AI development. Only then can we ensure that this powerful toolset is applied ethically, safely, and meaningfully, serving as a catalyst for progress rather than a threat to humanity.
