The future of AI is (likely) Quantum Computing

A bet?  After GenAI, Quantum AI

It is not only about Sam A. and the OpenAI saga. Everyone ( including me) is talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI) nowadays.  But while AI is evolving very fast requiring both ethical vigilance and agile experimentation of  the technologies for most corporations, AI is likely to be unleashed by quantum computing for formidable progress advances in speed, cost, and algorithm learning function. .

I had already reported my discussion at the European Parliament 3 years back around the importance of  “ quantum computing” , as a strategic necessity along the way AI and machine learning will unleash business and social innovation. I am now to the point to  bet that the next game changing will be Quantum Computing after generative AI.

A few reasons?

  1. Progress:  the quantum space has continuds to evolve dramatically. Superconducting technologies, are now reaching the  50−60 qubit devices , -even over 120 qubits, with the recent  IBM’s Eagle processor.
  2. Market starts to bite (the qubits).  IonQ, founded in 2015 by Monroe and Kim (a Moore’ s colleague) went public in 2021 and focuses on using trapped ions for quantum computing. IonQ’s quantum computing have 32 qubits, that interact with each other with a qubit fidelity rate of more than 99,9%. This parallel combination leads to computations speed and accuracy that are unique—with IonQ cooperating  in the financial sector with Goldman Sachs, for fast and complex  portfolio optimization and risk analysis.
  3. Quantum Computing has the power of a GPT. GPT, or General Purpose technologies “ as named by economists are technologies that have the power to be really invasive and play on every industry. Like electricity. Like the Internet. IonQ ismaking the case for Finance;  Rigetti Computing is exploring quantum computing applications in drug discovery, digging into molecular structures much more efficiently than classical computers. QuantumScope isworking on a pivot from ion batteries to solid battery, as away to power long lived batteries with much large riding range than today.
  4. New science.  Finally, one can imagine how HPC enables groundbreaking innovations in physics and chemistry, with the potential to reshape our understanding of the world, akin to past fundamental science discoveries.

How to lead, my dear Europe?

Not every trend is a quick buy and not every early entrant is a winner. But the reovolutino is starting, mandating a true geopolitical play.

As usual,  USChina, and Russia have already developed their own prototypes of quantum computers.   For once, Europe is not in rest with its  Quantum Technologies Flagship program,— as well as the EuroQCI Declaration

But... the journey is paved with challenge for Europe:

  1. Fragmentation looms. The issue again is that Europe is one voice, while all major countries, France, Germany notably are building their own country strategy in HP and Quantum computing.   HPC capacity is also distributed
  2. Who are the market darlings in HPC computing in Europe?
  3. Europe has talents, but can they morph into entrepreneurs?

Regarding AI, Europe is already somewhat lagging—the quantum AI requires Europe to move the frontier of those challenges, if one wants Europe to lead and support its strategic autonomy....ARE WE READY FOR THE CHALLENGE?

My understanding was the the applications currently being hypotesized for quantum computing are quite specific to some use cases where performance demonstrates "quantum supremacy", but not cannot be extended and generalized to broader classes of problems. I haven't gone into all the theorems there, so you might have a more informed perspective than I do.
