The future of fundraising at Canuck Place with Clayton Whitt
In an inspiring career dedicated to nonprofit work, Clayton Whitt, Manager, Annual Giving Programs at Canuck Place brings over three and a half years of experience to his role. Starting as a coordinator for the Online Giving Program, Clayton has grown into his managerial role with innovative ideas that have significantly shaped the organization’s fundraising strategies.
Clayton’s journey into the world of philanthropy was sparked early in his life following advice from a friend who suggested fundraising as a good entry point to learn about organizational operations and program functions. Although his career initially took him in a different direction, his friend’s advice laid the groundwork for his eventual entry into fundraising that culminated in his current role at Canuck Place. “I was looking to shift gears and find a role that contributed directly to the well-being of the community,” Clayton explains, reflecting on his transition to Canuck Place.
As the Manager of Annual Giving Programs, Clayton oversees a crucial part of Canuck Place’s fundraising operations. His portfolio includes online donations, our raffle program, and monthly donations from our Courage Builder Monthly Donor Club—all of which are all vital to ensuing sustainable funding for our core services. Since 60% of Canuck Place’s funding comes from our generous donors, Clayton’s team is undoubtedly fundamental to the organization’s success.
Monthly giving continues to flourish thanks to Clayton’s strategic guidance and the exceptional stewardship of the skillful coordinator with whom he works. Clayton regularly collaborates with the Canuck Place communications & marketing team on integrated fundraising and communications campaigns to holistically engage the organization’s donors.
One of his proudest achievements is the Canuck Place 50/50 raffle which has raised nearly $4 million in total jackpots since it launched in Fall 2020 and is expanding with the addition of a prize raffle this fall.

Clayton’s approach to leadership is grounded in shared values and a collective commitment to Canuck Place’s mission to provide compassionate care to children with life-limiting illnesses and their families. “I’ve never worked anywhere else where everyone had such a clear commitment to our shared values,” Clayton notes, emphasizing the unique environment at Canuck Place. This intrinsic motivation drives the team to continually improve fundraising techniques and quality of care.
Looking ahead, Clayton sees technology as a tool that, while useful, will never replace the fundamental human aspect of fundraising. “Fundraising will always be about building relationships and inviting people to make the world a better place,” he states. Instead of positioning technology as a replacement for people, Clayton’s focus is on using it to personalize outreach and enhancing the way the organization connects with and listens to donors.
Working at Canuck Place is more than just a job for Clayton; it is a rewarding opportunity to engage with some of life’s deepest questions—how to make meaningful memories and leave a positive impact in the world. “It is amazing to work in a place where my colleagues are all concerned with the same profound questions about life and its meaning.”
