Future Proofing Your Land

How Regenerative Farming Can Help Combat Ecological Collapse

Are you looking for new nature recovery and rewilding solutions?

Methods of land valuation have changed, and are always evolving. Your revenue will be the first to suffer if you do not keep up with the ever-shifting landscape. With the need to mitigate climate impacts such as soil erosion and land degradation to ensure the security of your food quality, water and land reserves, it is important to find ways that not only secure the integrity of your land but also your capital.

If steps are not taken to find a solution to these problems it can lead to reduced crop yields and water for irrigation which threatens the quality of the crops that do grow. By using methods such as regenerative farming and rewilding you will be able to offset the effects of climate change - helping secure the value of your land and in some cases, increasing the value of your land.

Can mitigating these impacts be cost-effective?

Here are a few examples of what you could do to mitigate climate impacts:

  • Regenerative farming: We work with nature to help tackle the effects of climate change and ecological collapse.

We do this by minimising human intervention:

  • Discouraging tillage: This will leave a residue on the soil surface which will help protect it in extreme weather and promote fungi and earthworms, further improving soil resilience.
  • Eliminating bare soil: Bare soil is susceptible to erosion which is why we discourage tillage.
  • Plant diversity: Having increased biodiversity can help improve pollination, pest and disease regulation and increase resilience to stress.

We minimise interventions and maximise biodiversity by taking advantage of nature's capacity to heal itself when its ecosystem is balanced. This practice not only helps increase the quality of your land but also helps reduce production costs.

  • Natural flood management(NFM): There are several benefits to restoring nature to mitigate flood risk, such as improving water quality, enhancing biodiversity and providing possible recreational opportunities. We view NFM as a way to manage the land as well as manage flood risks, as it also provides you with the following environmental and societal benefits:

  • Habitat creation & biodiversity: The creation of wetlands and woodlands will boost biodiversity and ecosystem connectivity.
  • Better water quality & reduced erosion: Improves the management of high nutrient loads, reducing the amount of sediment in the water, which will improve water quality.
  • Climate change mitigation: Store atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) and reduce carbon loss from soil.
  • Enhanced health & wellbeing: Create better green spaces for people to enjoy and connect with nature.
  • Increased productivity: Improves soil structure, which reduces the loss of topsoil and increases soil productivity.

  • Rewilding: Our rewilding approach focuses on increasing the value of your land whilst also maintaining or restoring the natural systems, which will inevitably help bring back your land's biodiversity. We believe in letting nature lead the way, and we are constantly working on and thinking about creative, natural solutions to build nature-based economics.

We do this by following the principles of rewilding:

  • Work at nature’s scale: working to enhance natural dispersal and connectivity while giving nature the space to grow and change independently.
  • Build nature-based solutions: Providing new economic opportunities through rewilding.
  • Protect the best, rewild the rest: By simultaneously protecting and developing new natural assets, we can accelerate nature's recovery.
  • Let nature lead: Restoring natural processes to shape our land and seascapes in more sustainable ways. Minimising human intervention can help facilitate this process.

We focus on long-term goals rather than fast solutions, working with other experts within the field to exchange best practice ideas.

How Ecosulis can future-proof your land:

With over 10 years of experience specialising in rewilding ecology, we are well-versed in creating farm regeneration plans, urban rewilding and river restoration projects, making us one of the UK’s top nature recovery teams. We especially understand the importance of sustainable food production, which is why we are working on a new rewilding advisory service for farmers. We will help you find nature-based solutions to make the most of your land through regenerative agriculture. Each project will be bespoke to your needs. We will work with you to find the best nature-based solutions that directly address your needs.

Our team can help you build a new business plan that takes into account all available natural assets, creating new value and future-proofing your land and business. We will also help you identify revenue-generating opportunities that you may have missed or not known about, such as natural goods and services, ecotourism or natural capital investing.

The need to future-proof your land has been made even more apparent this year with the continued rising challenges of the weather; we have seen an increase in high temperatures, drought, rainfall and flooding.

How does this affect agriculture in the UK?

  • Increased length in growing seasons.
  • Loss of productive land due to flooding.
  • Changes in the classification of land suitability due to changes in temperature and rainfall.
  • Increase in cost for farmers and customers.

By working with our innovative co-designers and partners, we can help you create new strategies that can combat these effects, such as natural flood management, reedbed filtration or sustainable urban drainage.
