As Cambodia progresses as a developing nation, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) take a prominent role in the growth and success of the country. With more government and financial support, entrepreneurs and artisans of all kinds have a greater opportunity than ever before to make their mark on the economy. SMEs represent a large portion of success for owners and employees in various industries, and the future will only get brighter.

Growth of SMEs in Cambodia

More than 155,000 SMEs were registered by 2020, and this number continues to grow. By 2025, the percentage is expected to reach 95% of this country’s economy. This is inline with the global averages.

With a 1.43% growth factor over the last year, 463,900+ employment opportunities existed due to SMEs. This statistic comes from registered companies only, which means the actual numbers are quite a higher. This is one of the many reasons why the government policies are encouraging them for increased registration through offering tax breaks and other benefits.

Emerging Industries and Sectors for SMEs

Tourism tops the list of popular sectors supported by small businesses in Cambodia. Clothing and footwear follow close behind. However, the generalized handicraft industry, especially textiles, also has a firm foundation when it comes to entrepreneurial expansion and new jobs. Other sectors of note include manufacturing, steel processing, agriculture and fishing, and wholesale trading.

Government Initiatives and Support

The popularity and employment options provided by small and medium enterprises in Cambodia fuel the government’s initiatives to support them even more. Despite their omnipresence across industries and niche markets, a relatively small percentage of them are officially registered. The government authorities aim to increase that through a 13-point system, new policy frameworks, and additional assistance.

Departments of SMEs, Handicraft Affairs, and SME Planning and Development Promotion work together to foster multiple initiatives that will help business owners and entrepreneurs succeed. These include both skills development programs and tax incentives.
