Futureproofing - The Future Beyond Innovation - The "Truth Edition"
"You are entitled to you own opinion, But you are not entitled to your own facts" - Daniel Patrick Moynihan
Truth is a mercurial thing nowadays. There are Truths (that have been around forever). There are Evident and Self-evident Truths, There are Sciences and Social Sciences and the pursuit of truths. There are Apparent Truths (things most of us agree on but can be challenged given new facts and evidence). There are Inconvenient Truths (things that we wish that weren't true but know deep down that they are). Do we agree? Fine.
But then there has been a recent expansion of our lexicon to include other forms of thinly-veiled truth, or let's call them for what they are - lies. Opinion Journalism (accompanying the rise of left & right-leaning cable news). Antiscience (around for five centuries but revived as a term post-pandemic). Truthiness (2006 Merriam-Webster's.word of the year). Filter Bubbles (invented in 2010) and its cousin Echo Chambers. Post-truths (2016 Oxford's word of the year). Fake News and its further breakdown into misinformation, dis-formation and mal-information (2017 Collins' word of the year). Alternative Facts (popularized by Trump spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway in 2017). My Truths and Your Truths (popularized by Oprah in her 2018 Golden Globs speech). Infodemics (coined in 2003, added to Dictionary.com in 2020). Deepfakes (spawned by advances in audio, photo and video editing and now AI in the 2020s).
I, for one, don't believe in factual relativism. It's lazy. It's now prolific. It's regressive, And it's frggin dangerous. Just because you are offended, politically correct, fragile, confident, passionate or opinionated, doesn't mean you're right, We are currently seeing once again with the Russia-Ukriane war, the first casualty of war is truth. And I'm sorry Kyrie Irving the world is not flat. Or referring to a spot-on Ricky Gervais stand up routine, the earth is not 6,000 years old (watch the first minute for the punchline here). Truth is not something we can wake up everyday, wave a magic wand and make it go away ... and yet everyday people try to do just that.
If truth can be changed from we have nothing to fall back on. It becomes a finger to the air that can change based on what someone thinks or what might be convenient at that moment. When we are grounded in something like truth we at least can have a benchmark, a starting point and a compass. Without a standard, we lose the ability to live, work and play together. If there is no truth, everything is up for grabs. Heh, why not let's drink that bleach as vaccine. Innovation and futureproofing have the added challenge of what the truth might look like about the future.
"The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge" - Isaac Asminov
