THE BIG TAKE
Gachagua's impeachment showdown in parliament
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces his accuser in parliament today. Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse has cited 11 grounds, including gross misconduct and constitutional breaches. Gachagua, represented by lawyer Paul Muite, will defend himself in a televised session. The National Assembly needs 233 MPs to pass the motion. If any of the charges are proven, Gachagua could be removed. The DP's junior members, including Governor Sakaja, have made serious allegations against him. Speaker Moses Wetang'ula stressed the importance of the motion, calling it a test of the integrity of the House.
Murder of British golfer stuns Mombasa
British golfer John Middleton was found brutally murdered at his home in Utange, Mombasa. His body, discovered by a cleaner, had severe machete wounds. Authorities suspect the attackers scaled his perimeter wall as nothing was stolen. (Read: Machete-wielding gangs terrorise Mombasa residents) Police are investigating, but no arrests have been made. Neighbours, who described Middleton as secretive, expressed concerns about suspicious activity near his home before the murder. His dogs, normally protective, were silent during the attack, raising suspicions of poisoning. (Read: Shot point blank. Unknown. Who are they?) Middleton, known as 'Fishbone' at the Nyali Golf & Country Club, had lived in the area for 15 years. His body is awaiting a post-mortem at the Aga Khan Hospital.
Gachagua: This is my defence
On Monday night, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stunned the nation when he denied allegations of corrupt wealth accumulation and undermining President Ruto. Speaking before his impeachment hearing, Gachagua refuted allegations involving 22 companies linked to him, clarifying ownership and defending his role in eviction and tender controversies. He condemned the allegations as baseless propaganda, reiterating his innocence and his willingness to defend himself in Parliament. The DP produced confidential documents, including the Kenya Kwanza pre-election agreement, to refute some of the allegations.
