The Game of Thrones Guide To Your Business

Game of Thrones is the world's most popular show.

But why do we all love it so much?

I have some theories...

I believe that apart from the dragons, the scandal and the cliffhanger endings, there are some real takeaways and insights which can help you in your business life.

I am avoiding spoilers completely so that anybody who has never watched it can do so and experience the emotional rollercoaster just like we did.

If you know the show, you will be able fill in the sample references yourself.

Here's how The Game of Thrones can help you grow your business.

1. Unpredictability. Nothing happens as you quite expect it to. The good guys go bad, the bad guys redeem themselves, established houses fall and new players enter the show every week bringing an impact and challenging the status quo. Takeaways. Be alert and expect things and people to change in your own industry. Nothing is forever, so stay on your toes.
2. Betrayal. So many times characters become complacent and die. Good and bad, strong and weak means nothing in GOT land. Being a family member doesn't guarantee any loyalty, but does mean that at least you have an insight or influence over what they will do next. Takeaways. Keep every relationship fresh and relevant because you never know when you will need their help.
3. Alliances. Every time a new partnership is forged, an equal and opposite enemy is created, so each character has to be very careful with whom they decide to do business. Takeaways. Look for strategic long and short term gains. Leverage your friendships and always think on behalf of the other person 'What's in it for me?' because that's exactly what they are thinking too.
4. It's business NOT personal. How many times have injustices been created for the greater good? Favourite heroes get slaughtered, young dependents abandoned, creepy megalomaniacs get exactly what they wanted even though we hated them the list is endless. Every episode injustices happen of some description but the strongest characters in the show endure because they know this is just part of life. My own personal Tyrion Lannister has weaved a path through all the main protagonists and joined/left rival families because he knows what will come IS NOT PERSONAL, so he just acts and moves on. Takeaways. Know that everyone has their own agenda too. Respect that and don't spend too much time crying over spilled milk. Get a new cow instead.
5. Possession is 90% of ownership. Characters become powerful when they discover they have opportunities and do something daring with them. Reinvigorating and leading a dormant army yet immensely powerful army, raising aeroplane sized dragons from tiny eggs, discovering an ancient explosive chemical with the potential to napalm an entire fleet. Nobody gets handed a free pass, but when they see something useful they grab it and run with it regardless of original or rightful ownership. After a short time these things become theirs to lose and the ones who created them are always on the back foot to get them returned or even destroyed by the things that they made in the first place. Takeaways. Go out and get things. Treat them as yours instinctively. Doesn't mean you have to be dishonest or steal them, just believe that you have the right to own anything and think of ways to make that your new reality. In life coaching it's called having a vision board.
6. Life's a bitch. How many characters have died/ been disfigured/ lost everything/ been wronged/ been betrayed by loved ones/ had a bit of a tough time. So what? Boo hoo. Next Episode please... Takeways. Everyone else is too busy looking after their own life to spend more than a passing interest in yours. Don't expect things to be fair or fate to step in and save you. You create your own luck and opportunities. and sometimes they don't work out too well. Sometimes they do. Regardless, never dwell too long on anything, just keep moving forward and let momentum motivate your next adventure.
7. Winter is coming. Yes, this pessimistic mantra of doom and gloom has been casting a shadow over the weekly politics, philanderings and beheadings since episode one. You have no choice but to prepare for it and make sure you are ready when it comes. Takeaways. Pick an analogy and it fits like a glove. Old age and retirement, industry reinvention and closure of old technology, the global status quo and economic certainty etc... Nothing is forever but you can be with eyes and ears tuned into the sound of an enemy on the horizon and investing your time, energy and resources to find partnerships and smart solutions that will help you stay alive and even prosper.
8. Size isn't everything. The smallest characters in the show have all become the most influential. Jon Snow, Bron, Arya and Sensa Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen (mother of dragons) and even Joffrey (that nasty evil little git) surprised everybody by learning their lessons and adapting to their circumstances. The clear powerhouses don't tend to last too long unless they have people around them who they trust to look after their interests. Takeaways. Smaller players have mobility, they can move where the opportunities lie and they can grow an army before showing up on any radars. They always need a protector though to step up. This could be a sponsor, business partner or financial injection.
9. Quality counts. The show may have had a ton of promotion and advertising over the last few seasons but it was ultimately the word of mouth marketing that turned Game of Thrones into a global phenomenon. The acting is mostly fantastic, the special effects state of the art and the source material is the work of genius. Anybody recommending to a friend that it's great was rewarded with agreement. Viral media at it's best. Takeaways. Game of Thrones crept up on many people and caught them off guard. The plots are still held in the utmost secrecy and actors are contracted to silence. Are you blowing your own trumpet too often and quickly? Choose your time to launch and invest big when you do it if you truly want to make an impact.
10. Dragons are cool. They just are. Takeaways. Get a dragon (or marry one).

It's truly worth seeing the parallels, life lessons and takeaways in your own situation.

We have all dealt with unfair decisions, crumbling establishments and evil tyrants taking over empires (don't get me started).
