Generative AI is a mash up artist

The Washington Post reported on layoffs of copywriters and other creative workers. “Those who write marketing and social media content are in the first wave of people being replaced with tools such as chatbots, which are seemingly able to produce plausible alternatives to their work” [1].

Are Generative AI algorithms (GenAI) capable of replacing human creativity? Rightfully, the rise of AI has triggered a debate on ethics. What can be considered ethical? How to ensure that an AI system behaves ethically. Surprisingly, novelty has not received the same degree of attention. However, in order to be able to understand the impact of GenAI on creative workers and on human creativity, we need to be able to define precisely what novelty is, whether it is possible and perhaps desiderable.

Novelty is defined as the quality of being new [2]. The term novel  is often used as a synonym of original and it is associated with innovations, inventions and creativity. Are GenAI algorithms capable of producing novel content?

A “blurry JPEG of the web”

Generative AI (GenAI) models learn from examples. They learn what a dog is by looking at tons of pictures of dogs. By learning what is common across samples and what samples have in common, GenAI models don’t have to remember all the individual dogs they have seen to have an idea of what a dog might look like. Simply put, GenAI are ultimately algorithms for data compression.

If we look at GenAI algorithms as simple data compression algorithms, we can better understand the limitations of their creative process. Ted Chiang on the New Yorker argues that ChatGPT is a blurry JPEG of the web, and that “a blurry copy of unoriginal work isn’t a good way to create original work” [3].

How is novelty born?

Is Ted Chiang right? Is it true that something truly novel cannot generate from “a blurry copy of unoriginal work”? This is up for debate. “In chronological priority and in intellectual influence, nothing comes from nothing can be considered the foundational premise of Western philosophy” [4].

According to Kirby Ferguson, the canadian filmmaker author of the popular video series about creativity, everything is a remix. Novelty is something that arises from the processing of existing knowledge and ideas. GenAI models might then take a shot at novelty and innovation.

But does novelty pay in the market?

“Right now, at a time when most first-run movies seem to be either remakes or sequels, when the popular new singers are all expert mimics of some vocal style of the past, when period nostalgia progresses through the decades faster than time itself and threatens to catch up with the present, the status of novelty as a value would not seem to be particularly high” [5].

Indeed, the market seems not to value novelty. At least, when it comes to social media marketing writers, the first creatives impacted by a wave of layoffs. “Experts say that even advanced AI doesn’t match the writing skills of a human: It lacks personal voice and style, and it often churns out wrong, nonsensical or biased answers. But for many companies, the cost-cutting is worth a drop in quality” [6].

In a nutshell (conclusions)

The latest AI developments should be an opportunity to reflect on novelty and creativity: what novelty is, how to continue fostering creativity in an organization, and whether novelty is truly valued in the market.
