Get to know Henry Hughes, NOIR Executive Champion

To kick-off Black History Month, J.Crew Group (JCG) is excited to highlight the leaders of the NOIR Associate Impact Group (AIG).

NOIR’s purpose is to create a safe space for associate connection, education, partnership, and activation. Through impactful conversations and community building initiatives—NOIR aims to contribute to the professional and personal development of group members while connecting and amplifying the contributions of Black associates across the company along with allies who wish to join our efforts.

Meet Henry L. Hughes, NOIR Executive Champion & Director of Distribution Center Operations. Read on to learn more his journey to JCG, his vision for an inclusive workplace and how he honors Black History Month.

Q: What made you join the team at JCG?

HH: I encountered a warm and inviting atmosphere during my initial visit to the Asheville building. All the leaders were actively engaged, cultivating a culture of inclusivity and support where each individual's efforts were acknowledged and honored. It quickly dawned on me that this environment was conducive to personal growth and advancement. Since then, I haven't once second-guessed my decision to join the this team!

Q: What made you raise your hand to be the Executive Champion for NOIR? What does NOIR mean to you?

HH: Being an executive sponsor for NOIR is a position of responsibility. It allows me to continue immersing myself in the JCG culture. It means actively championing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the organization. As an executive sponsor, I see it as my duty to advocate for the needs and interests of the Black community, both within the workplace and in broader society. It involves using my influence and resources to support initiatives that promote equality, address systemic barriers, and amplify the voices of Black colleagues.

Being an executive sponsor also entails actively listening to the experiences and concerns of Black employees, fostering open dialogue, and collaborating with leadership to implement meaningful change. It's about leading by example, demonstrating a commitment to inclusion and belonging, and creating opportunities for professional development and advancement for Black individuals.

Q: How do you envision NOIR will impact JCG? What are you most excited about in the upcoming year?

HH: I envision NOIR significantly impacting various areas within JCG's home office, stores, and DCs. In the home office, NOIR can influence company policies and initiatives to promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), ensuring these values are embedded in every aspect of the organization's operations. In stores, NOIR can foster a more inclusive environment for employees and customers, leading to greater satisfaction and loyalty. In the Distribution Center (DC), NOIR can advocate for fair hiring practices and support underrepresented employees, creating a more equitable workplace. Across JCG, NOIR can collaborate with other resource groups to amplify their impact and promote intersectional DEI efforts.

I'm most excited to see the tangible results of NOIR's efforts in the upcoming year. I look forward to witnessing positive changes in our company culture, increased representation and advancement opportunities for Black employees, and fostering a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all. Additionally, I'm excited to see NOIR's collaboration with other resource groups and the broader community to drive meaningful change and make a lasting impact.

Q: What are your plans to honor and celebrate Black History Month?

HH: For me, Black History Month is an opportunity to learn and revisit my ancestors, their significant contributions, and how they permeate many aspects of society today. It highlights the told and untold stories of African Americans who, despite challenging circumstances, served an inspiring purpose through their skills and talents. It's a reminder of my history, where I come from, and where I've yet to go. I would not have risen to where I am today without standing on their shoulders.
