Getting Ghosted? I Have the Answer.

Getting Ghosted? I Have the Answer.

If you're trying to achieve anything, you are in sales. So don't think that this doesn't apply to you. Are you trying to sell something? Yes, I mean you ( who else is here?) So don't think that this doesn't apply to you. A job interview? Your product? Everyone's in sales, so don't click away and think, "I'm not in sales, and this does not apply to me." How many times may I say it?

If you are trying to accomplish anything, you are in sales. Ok, enough of my soapbox.

Are you getting ghosted? Are you not hearing anything? Radio silence? Everything went great, and then... crickets. It happens, and I see people fretting away so much time as to why. I have the answer. But before I get there, here are some common reasons WHY you may not be hearing anything:

  1. Misplaced exuberance is the expression used to describe a situation where someone exhibits excessive enthusiasm or excitement that is not in line with the circumstances. They get all excited and see you as the new shiny object, reach out to engage, and then the passion cools, and boom—you are ghosted.
  2. Lack of interest: Sometimes, prospects lose interest or find a better alternative, leading them to disengage without explanation. Sorry, it's not them, it's you.
  3. Poor communication: If there are misunderstandings or unclear expectations during conversations, prospects may choose to ghost rather than address concerns.
  4. Overwhelmed or busy: Prospects might be overwhelmed with other priorities or simply too busy to continue the conversation. Not everything is about you.
  5. Decision-making process: Some prospects may need more time to decide or gather information before proceeding, temporarily halting communication. Breathe.
  6. Fear of confrontation: In some cases, prospects may avoid difficult conversations or say no directly by ghosting instead

Here is the answer:

If you have a big pipeline ( meaning lots of opportunities), don't waste a ton of time worrying about why you are being ghosted. You might never find out. It's rude, and I get how annoying it can be. I have been ghosted more times than I can count. I know it is frustrating, and it's out of your control.

The more prospects you have, the less this is an issue. That means don't put ALL of your eggs in one basket. It means you have to think like a salesperson because, gasp, you are in sales. Selling is a mindset and a behavior.

Take control of your destiny and stop being a "sales apologist." Start thinking like a salesperson and build a healthy and robust pipeline.

If you are aiming for any goal, you are essentially in sales. Therefore, don't think that sales doesn't apply to you.

Thanks Todd for the reminder that we all experience the pain and annoyance of being ghosted. Your advice is spot on - which is move on. Sales (and everyone is in it) is often a numbers game. Also, there are often reasons beyond our control and while it irks me that people don't have the common courtesy to simply say no thanks, it's not worth the time or energy to dwell.

Todd, ghosting happens more than I like, for sure. I take a minute then move on. It's sales.

As much as the ghosting is frustrating and annoying, you are right Todd, the best way to combat all of this is mindset and the depth and breath of your pipeline. But as you say, first we all need to own that everyone is in sales. #workplace #employer
